I gotta ask, how did you get eight deuce squad leaders for 40k? Scale is waaaay off to be from FOW.
FoW isn't the ONLY WW2 game out there.
Warlord Games BOLT ACTION is a 28mm WW2 skirmish, for example, and the models are in scale with guard for 40k (it's just that 40k models aren't in scale with themselves, let alone each other, or models from different races in the same game.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

When he says they're FoW paratroopers, logical assumption is they're FoW miniatures.

As an update to my first post in this thread: the upcoming Raging Heroes Kickstarter has made me want an all-female Imperial Guard detachment for some time. Won't be tourney legal, since it's all going to be Raging Heroes minis, but it sure will look awesome!

For which tournies?
Given that GW stopped supporting tournaments in most of the world several years ago, more and more tournaments are doing away with (or did away with some time ago) the GW model requirement. I've played in tournaments against at least two Guard armies that were entirely made up of 3rd party infantry.

Honestly dont care what you bring when its a friendly game. Tourney's gotta go by the TO's rules, though our local TO pointed out that since GW no longer supports them, they technically don't have to be GW products. (though we still play it that way to continue support for the FLGS)

The best part about paper proxies is you can afford to burn and maim them as the game goes on and make cool battlefield casualties. Cinematic-tism!
To me creative modeling is the entire point of 40K. If you want every model to look the same, why not buy pre-painted clix minis, or play the Pokemans? The army is yours, and you should not only pick the color and composition, but the theme.
Since there are units in codeci without models, and most models lack sane prices it's really no question for me. Equipment and scale need to be WYSIWYG of course, but if someone's going to mewl about my dakkajet being based on a WWII fighter frame rather than a GW model I'm not going to enjoy playing them anyway.
Glass coke bottles make fantastic dakkajet frames just FYI

Is this really representative of 40k in the USA? Here in NZ, 3rd party and scratch built stuff is A-OK is at least 99% of tournaments. I swear to god at the last tournament a guy used a toy cow painted red for some chaos daemon from Fantasy and noone batted an eyelid.

1. Ask your store if they can order the 3rd party minis you want. You'll be amazed what they can get in America. 2. GW doesn't really sponsor tournaments anymore. Even the big ones like Adepticon and Feast of Blades are pretty laid back about 3rd party models now. 3. They're your models, make em look cool and nobody will care, especially for IG.

Don't care, while I'll use the official FW for my Kriegsmen troopers, I'll happily get third party models or sratchbuild for other things (one exception, Valkyries, so preeeeeeetty!)
But not for my toopers, becasue then the aesthetic is all messed up.

I voted depends, my cousin and i started playin when we were 11. We often played at 2000 points and used his green and tan army men, some blue n grey ones, trasnformers for vehicles, it was great, we always tried to pick stand ins that made sense but that wasnt always available.
Also when you're proying somehting that you may or may not want to buy yet idc what kind of mini it is, my cousin used one of the oldskool batman flyers(batwing maybe?) to proxy as a doomscythe. Damn can batman pack a punch lol

Personally I hate it, its great when done well, lots of converting etc etc. But when I pay thousands of dollars for a full GW built and painted army that I take pride in, it pisses me off when you wind up versus a bunch of plastic army men etc. The exception is if a player is trying out something new, I don't expect people to buy things without having tried them first
