My IG solution to everything: artillery.
Specifically Medusas... Madusae? Multiple Medusa.
Ratlings also would do a number (they do on every other MC).
Or, try this one: Kill hit markerlight sources, then you get cover. Then kill his troupes. He can't score. Then camp on your objectives and win.

Most hateful solution=jaws. With the nerf to runes of warding Tau can no longer take a tiny eldar detachment to shut down jaws.
Most amusing solution PBS. Drop their leadership, kill 2 drones, and lulz.
The meta may see less of them now. The popularity of wraithguard in serpents is a concern for riptides, and de venomspam is also growing more powerful with every new dex.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Telepathy powers work great against the Riptide. Puppet master and use it to shoot his own bubble wrapping units. Terrify and run off the board. Hallucination and it sits there.
BA Fear the Darkness is an awesome power against Tau.
As mentioned before, JAWWS is great against Riptides.

Space Wolves are rare in my meta, and im usually playing orks. But the one time i played Tau against them he never even got close to my riptide because i kept focus firing that unit to hell and back as well as supercharging my thrust move to get away faster. Even got lucky when he had me cornered, i moved 6" along the board edge (furthest from him) and thrusted 23" rofl ohhh he was PISSED (and i finally killed the damn unit the next turn, lucky ass invuls...)
He focused sooo much on getting my lone riptide. And did almost nothing in the process.
Anyway, gloating overwith, as stated before a single riptide is nothing but a distraction. Its hard to kill without poor positioning or bad rolls (3 failed nova charges in a row....) and its not THAT deadly. Crisis suit teams are cheaper and put more punch out there, but are much easier to take out. Single riptide? Ignore it, trust me. While i havent done it, i can totally see the danger of 3 riptides (now i wanna do it rofl) and kinda forces you to figure it out.

Pulled EXACTLY that in the last Apoc game
Since we were pulling out all the stops for Apocalypse I went for the extra cheese and put Njal in terminator armor with 4 WG in terminator armor.

I run three riptides at 1850 and 2000pts. I'll be the first to admit they're pretty tough and they're a big part of why my 6th ed Tau stand at 6-0 for this first two gt events. They're hard to kill mostly because of their remarkable range and mobility. At 540pts(Ion, TL SMS, EWO) 3 riptides in my experiences thus far will always deliver their points.
With that said, personally I believe MY riptides greatest weaknesses are AV11-12 flyers with either high volume of shot or multiple ap1-2 weapons (Vulture, Stormraven, Vendetta). I say AV 11-12 because AV 10 flyers really have to be careful. 8 TL SMS shots is nothing to look over. Besides that, I'd say dark eldar splinter cannons are pretty scary and have a good chance of getting in range.
In your situation though and given the meta of your opponent's list I'd recommend a land raider. Riptides and Broadsides are good at a lot of things, but that AV 14 will give them some serious problems and those lascannons will be able to do some serious damage to both as well. Put an combat heavy sweeper squad inside and drive it up to the Tau lines. From the sounds of it, that should work pretty well for you. Unless I missed something and he kits hit riptides with Tl fusion, but even then those are no where near reliable than double fusion suits. If the Tau player is running Ion tides with EWO, that squad will get nuked hard before ever having a single chance of killing just 1 riptide. Automatically Appended Next Post: Martel732 wrote:Step 1: don't cheap out as imperials. Leave the ML at home, bring real guns like lascannons.

I agree with your last line. Killing off markerlight support is a major set back. Ratlings and Medusas though are too inefficient to kill multiple riptides. As a Tau player first and a IG player second, I'd recommend Vendettas or large amounts of lascannon or autocannon.

I did this for jokes. Deepstriked a 10-man Terminator squad with my Librarian. EWO Intercept took out the majority of them, but they were the invul-wounds-meat. Librarian Warp Rifts 2 of them. Initiative 2 doesn't like Warp Rift. Of course, that squad promptly died next turn.

How did you warp two of them? That's some really sad deployment skills on the behalf of the Tau player.

Flamer template. We were playing the deployment zone that went corner to corner, and with one large terrain piece in his deployment it was bound for his Riptides to be clustered at least 2 together or near each other.

Well mine just died tonight to a blood angels chaplain with a concussive weapon after being locked in combat for about 2 turns. Of course, he landed with a drop pod in an entire 10 man death company and was the only one that actually made it into combat (and he had a wound on him).

Stalwart Dark Angels Space Marine

I have fought exactly 1 Riptide and it was played by the person that helped me develop my Deathwing centered tri-wing Dark Angels list. The outcome of the game was that I lost 10-1. The score; however, does not reflect what happened in that game.
My buddy was playing a Tau-Eldar army with Eldrad and a squad of GJBs (this was before the new Runes of Warding nerf) his main army was centered around a large and expensive Farsight bomb. I won first turn and first deployment. As such I deployed my LRC (with embarked Dakka banner command squad and Techmarine with powerfield generator), RWBKs, Devastators with attached Librarian (in ruins) in a relatively central position on the board. The LRC parked directly in front of the devastators to block LoS to them. I had three 5-man squads of Deathwing Terminators in Deathwing Assault reserves with Belial (each squad had 1 TH/ SS. 2 had Assault Cannons 1 had a heavy flamer Belial was attached to this squad). He had Farsight with his bodyguards, 2 squads of Kroot, a 6-man squad of Fire warriors and the GJBs in reserves. On the table in a sort of denied flank/castle deployment he had 1 squad of fire warriors (10-man I believe in a ruins), a 2 3-man suit squads (one with fusion the other with plasma), his riptide with Eldrad attached to him for fun shenanigans. My buddy failed to seize the initiative and was able to corner him with my deep striking on the first turn in such a fashion that only 1 unit could get out of charge range from my terminators (I only lost 3 terminators from his interceptor fire by the way) on his turn one. Turn two I was able to multi-charge the Riptide and one full squad of suits. After laying waste to the squad of suits and killing the riptide with a combination of thunder hammer and power fist attacks Eldrad failed his leadership check (he needed ) and ran off the board. At the end of my turn 2 my buddy only had 4 firewarriors left on the board. Once Farsight arrived I made a bunch of tactical errors that cost me a lot of terminators and the game.
In short it has been my experience that Deathwing Terminators can deal with a Riptide. Riptide has no answer for AV14 even less for one with a 4++ (yes I now run my techmarine outside the LRC and right next to it blocking almost all LoS to it).
Suggestions. If I were to run GK against TFG I would run 2 DK with heavy incinerators and at least 1 full squad of interceptors with 2 incinerators (and probably a Nemesis TH on the justicar). Psyfleman Dreds (I forget if they are heavy or elites) if you can afford them and maybe Coteaz with monkeys and SS's. Add strike squads in razorbacks with either psibolt heavy bolters or assault cannons. I think you may have enough points to spare for a Grandmaster and a squad of Paladins with banner.
If you wanted to bring Chaos again I would suggest either a demon prince with telepathy for all the fun stuff it can pull and/or an unmarked sorcerer with telepathy. 3d6 vs LD 9 with Psychic Shreak can potentially wipe out a Riptide in one go. Other things to take, Obliterators, Plague marines (4+ poison is nothing to sneeze at especially coming out of a LR) and of course Dakka's favorite CSM unit, the Heldrake.

I would disagree that the Riptide can't handle AV 14. The str 9 ordinance blast has a 50% chance of stripping a hull point on AV 14 (roll 2 dice pick highest is a wonderful thing). Also taking the fusion blaster as a secondary weapon is a good idea to interceptor pop toughness 4 stuff, so if they put that on there then charging up to them in a land raider might not be the best idea (they don't ignore melta or anything do they?)

I guess it depends on what you're fighting. If you ask me, unless you are taking the burst cannon, putting a SMS on it would make your riptide amazingly conflicted on target selection. The ion just loves to destroy marines and terminators, while the SMS...doesn't so much.
Plus I have the Doom of Malan`tai raining on my head with distressing regularity so strength 8 interceptor is in very high demand.

SMS doesnt do anything for me, because of what dementedwombat said. Target conflicts. Its the same reason i never take Rokkitz with boyz groups or Kustom Mega Blastas in ... any ork group lol. Its either overkill and waste of points or half the unit is wasted.
I always take the Fusion. Yes i tend to have several turns of never using it, but that one turn i do use it is always critical.
