I wanted to put GK up there..
but they just keep getting worse with every new codex...

I put space marines up there because... I don't know why.. but I have the hardest time against them with my tau...
for some reason space marines beat me all the time and it drives me nuts
I think the new space marines codex is very balanced and even a little slightly above average and that most people don't realize how good it is...

No idea for number 6, it starts getting hazy after 5. I'd really say Eldar and Tau are probably tied for 1st. Necrons just fit the core rules so well that they still do super well over even other 6E lists, but Eldar/Tau have the gimmicks to upturn that. Daemons have a couple really powerful builds but otherwise a lot of snooze. Space Marines really are probably the "perfect" book right now. Relatively little that's rage inducing (at least, that hasn't been so for ages, e.g. ATSNKF) aside from a couple of characters (looking at you way-overdone Tigurius and auto-pilot Vulkan), it's a strong book that offers a lot of variety and customization but doesn't just run automatic roughshod over everything.

I see a lot of people throwing IG up there, but they really don't do well on their own, the massive nerfs to vehicles in 6E coupled with the general ineffectiveness of many of their "core" infantry units has *really* taken that army down. They can still be very powerful if paired with an ally. I'd vote them the best "ally" army, they bring a lot of necessary numbers and big guns to an otherwise "elite" army for sure.
