One tactic I heard mentioned is to take Piranhas and then put all their Drones into a single larger "unit." You can fly it around like it's a unit, but since it's actually many units of two, it can force the enemy to burn a lot of shooting to kill it off, since any one unit can only get two. Not sure this is enough to recommend the Piranha, but it's certainly a trick.

I believe that if you buy multiple piranhas in one unit their drones do form one unit.

yep

thats more gun drones in a single unit than you can buy seperately and since they only count as passengers on a pirahna you might as well detach them and have 3 more fast units-it'ss like 2 for the price of 1. 3-X5 unit pirahna squads and 3-X10 unit gun drone squads.
