Should the BRB Warlord Traits have been grouped differently?
Yes, as you suggest or with small suggestions of mine on top of your idea.
Yes, but your idea is as bad as GW's
No, GW got it right in one try, or at least very close to it.

My friends and I do the 'Roll first, pick from any list' method.

However, I still have not found any to actually affect the game. I've even gotten the 'scoring warlord' trait on my Flyrant, and only ended up getting linebreaker anyway, since it was nowhere near an objective at the end.

The only argument that's ever come up was when I rolled the trait that says 'enemies within 12" must use their lowest LD', and my opponent rolled the trait that said 'friendly units within 12" may use the warlords LD'. He keps saying his 'may use' overrode my powers 'must use' requirement. Thankfully a store staff settled it (store rules are with rules issues like that, must overrides may), and also the situation for that never actually arose.

The Warlord Trait system is terrible.

1/50 times I have gotten a trait that won me the game by 1 point (The 1 VP for defeating an enemy in a challenge one).

49/50 times I get outflank or something equally useless. (I run my Warlord in terminator armor with TH/SS terminators in a Stormraven, so Outflank or any of the ones about your own deployment zone are utterly useless).

My group plays that you can roll a die, and then pick the table. If your codex has an extra table, you can pick off of that one as well. We usually rule that if a tau player re-rolls his power because he selects one of the options on the tau table, his new roll is automatically from the tau table.

That said, warlord traits are a little messup up. I have a few games where my space wolves get acute sense, then I have other games where my lysander+thunderfire list is playing on a city map and I roll city fighter.

Space Marines (Anything but BA or GK): 6k
Tau: 3k
