Items are a total no-go for comp as they heavily tilt the balance towards luck. Same as in Mario Kart.

ITT: People afraid of competition and attributing their failure to a lack of skill instead of luck.

Actually, I'm good at poker. Slot machines are boring. Can have fun in Poker even without betting on real money. Poker is also considered highly competitive I should note.

Edit: So many typos... feth it, I'm deleting it. Suffice it to say, I think we're really getting off topic here. I know you have a huge desire to defend the decisions of "competitive" players, but wasn't this thread about Nintendo's actions regarding live streaming of its videos?

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Poker also relies on completely different mechanics that focus more on mind games and reading than the strength of the hand. The random factors are also formalized to specific process as part of specific phases of the game. Each deck is 52 cards. In competitive poker, decks are expected to be shuffled to a certain standard. New cards are not added to the deck or players hands between draws. The dynamic of the random factors in poker are completely different from those in Smash. The random elements of poker go on to serve the mind game elements, acting as a catalyst for the real game which starts after the hands are dealt, where as in Smash, they go to push the game towards a one sided, passive ordeal.

You've never played a competitive match, let alone a tournament.
You've never watched a competitive match (and there's the perfect opportunity right now, on Evo's stream page, there were some amazing matches today).
You don't even know the mechanics involved.

So stop complaining about competitive players and calling them 'pig-headed', because you clearly have no idea about what you're even talking about.

Being forced to divide your attention between the opponent and the environment around you is second nature to physical sports.

Yeah because navigating a flat field is such a challenge -_- Very few sports involve randomness as a factor. Don't expect e-sports to be much different. Competitive balance will always favor predictability in its rule set over randomness even in games of chance.

Also, Fafnir you have to admit that while pro level competitive players can be great guys in streams and even in game, competitive minded players (note these two things are different overlapping groups) are very often assholish in their interactions with others.

Back in CoD4 I knew a pro level player for Ghosts [Ghst]Moses and he was great. He played great he was fun to talk to and he was all around an awesome guy to be around. I also knew Ion, a complete ahole who took the game way to seriously and while very good just wasn't good enough to be a pro level player and very often wasn't fun to be around. EDIT: And heaven forbid Moses and Ion be in the same server at the same time. I had to issues harsh warnings more than once.

It's not surprising that these competitive minded players would soil the water for the rest of us as we'll likely have much more contact with them than with the much smaller community of players actually good enough to be pro. And not all pro level players are great either (St Vicious of LoL fame and a certain Zerg player in SCII). Maybe we should all stop generalizing.

I tend to attribute that to the fact that you'll find self-idolizing witches in pretty much every group.

Thankfully, most just tend to be a big fish in a small pond, and tend to get pretty humbled after their first few real competitive matches against good players.

There's a term for those dick players who continue to maintain their self-obsession while making excuses to justify their failings, "scrubs."

Also, holy Dr.PP upset Batman.
