Pretty surprised that WoC are so high - my guess is that this is more to do with how often people face them and the "pretty easy for beginner" wins, more than them actually being top tier (even top 3)

Both BotWD & Alarielle are game wrecking together.
Just write up a High Elves LIon Bannerstar lis then remove Banner of the world dragon all of a sudden they can be beaten by a lot of things its still a t3 horde. Also it should be pointed that of the Six spells Purple sun and Pit of shades wreck some armies but against HE, DE, WE, Skaven, WOC and Parts of DOC it does very little.
Well to be fair;
1. BotWD on it's own is game wrecking for Daemons & most Wood Elf builds, unless it's on a token unit of like 5-6 DP's or is being carried by a BSB in the front rank of a unit. (at least you can focus-fire on him!)
2. Alarielle on her own is game wrecking for Daemons, but can be potentially highly annoying to all 'Forces of Disorder' when she lands a stupidly lucky Heroic Killing Blow from the second rank of the unit she's bunkered in!
3. Both BotWD + Alarielle together are game wrecking for absolutely everyone!
The existence of Pit & PSun is why I'd always rank the likes of Ogres, VC's, Lizzies & Nurgle Daemons to be lower on the competitive scale than WoC, Skaven & High/Dark Elves...
Shadow & Death are still popular lores overall, thus having 4-5 potential 'insta-gib' spells that can wreck your main units means you'll always be sitting behind those armies that only fear 2-3 of those spells. (and Dreaded 13th can be ignored by going for a non-infantry build)

Oh I remember back to the days of infernal gateway. That horrific spell which saw my huge, expensive units disappear in a flash. Damn how that spell annoyed me!

 , i bet if that spell still existed most HE players would be moaning that the over-pay for the BoTWD

Well, a couple of the local TFG's who play HE's are claiming that the banner is useless unless you face Daemons, at which point, they claim it's the only thing that gives them a fighting chance vs the still OP Daemon filth.

One.) The banner is far from useless I was playing chaos warriors and a poorly timed miscast blew my opponents main caster and most of his unit up. my white lions who had been losing the combat all of a sudden outnumbered the chaos warriors by a lot. I agree that against some armies BoTWD is a piece of clothe who's only main use is mitigating miscast damage.
Also old gateway was a *****. My friend just cast it trying to remove my units from play

Their are amazing builds for each army. One that I have found that does VERY VERY well for me has been an untraditional ogre army of all monsters. One unit of bulls to fill the core requirements and nothing but girants, stonehorns, thundertusks, and lots of mournfang. Sure cannons do a number on them but never can do enough damage before I am on top of whoever I'm playing.

My first ever game with WoC was against High Elves - last book but 8th edition. I went first and removed his WL and BSB with IG. His General panicked and ran off the board with his archer block, as did his PG. Three rolls of 11 / 12 and I had won the game in the first magic phase. Needless to say, not all games have gone that well....
