I started playing when I was 36. My sons (9, 11 and 15 at the time) had just gotten into the hobby and I while I had done a lot of RPGs when I was younger I had heard of but never tried any flavor of Warhammer. It looked like fun and gave me an opportunity to connect with my boys so I picked up an Eldar battleforce and I've enjoyed it ever since. I switched to Daemons about 6 months before 6th Ed came out and at this point I think I enjoy the game more than my sons do. I'll be 40 this summer.

A nice thing about being older is that I have collected more resources and skills. I am not necessarily referring to money to buy figures and in game tech, but the other resources and skills to create an environment conducive to enjoying the game.

My neighbor, an age mature person like myself, got me into the game, then convinced his wife to let him build a full sized 40K table in his garage. Neither one of us had the ability as 20-somethings to build something like that... or convince our wives this was a good idea. Now there is no need to go to the pub before or after playing because our gaming environment also functions like a pub with a backyard grill!

No matter your age, what better way to spend a weekend afternoon than enjoying friends, 40K, alcoholic beverages, and roasted meat?

Hi everybody.

My only concern is that I am either going to struggle to play games (none of my friends are interested) or that if I do play other 30-something-year-olds I'll just be dreadful since I've never really played before (despite knowing a lot about the game, e.g. listening to the 11th company podcast religiously, etc).

What do people think? Am I weird/daft to think about taking the game up for the first time at my age?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

1. You will lose the first ten games. Don't be upset by this. Just realize that you're learning and doing it to have fun and escape reality for a bit. your first wins will be nail biters. Enjoy that too because you're just doing it to have fun and escape reality.
2. Seek advice in good faith from those you played. The "local meta" is different everywhere you go, so slight changes in player propensities and list trends will become apparent to you from what you see and hear in your area. Knowing what they are will help you tweak your list better. Once you get comfortable with the list, the game starts to become easier to absorb. Successes will follow.
3. Wait 3 games between major listy changes. Sometimes it takes a bit for you to SEE how the change you made CAN work. Dont be over reactive to failure. Just try to problem solve with what you've got through 2-3 games and THEN decide where the tweak should be.

Just my advice. It's fun. Get on or START a local forum for gamers so you can set up games. keep a piece of paper with the gamers in your area on it with you all the time. Add to it when you can.

Break your army into two parts. One for you and one to show people the hobby. Best way to engage someone is to let them try it for free.

Hold out bait to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and then crush him.

Hi everybody.

I've been a longtime (on-and-off) follower of 40K since I was a teenager. I'm now 32.

On-and-off I've collected 40K miniatures and read the fluff but I've never really played a full game. I really enjoy the painting/modelling side of the hobby. The last time I rolled dice in anger was about 14 years ago and the last time I painted was about 4 years ago.

Recently I have found myself looking to take up a new hobby. I dug out a (largely) unpainted Dark Angels army, picked up the 6th Ed rule book and Dark Angels codex and started painting. My only concern is that I am either going to struggle to play games (none of my friends are interested) or that if I do play other 30-something-year-olds I'll just be dreadful since I've never really played before (despite knowing a lot about the game, e.g. listening to the 11th company podcast religiously, etc).

I started this game at the age of 35. (I am now 43)

Played my first game of warhammer in 1986....lets just say I am a bit older now...

In my gaming group the age ranges from 19-50. I would say most of the guys are late 30's early 40s, as well we have the patience and disposable income.

Over the years the wives and girlfriends (the smart ones) have been supportive of the various gaming (just about everything) - from their point of view they say "I know where my husband is on a Friday night..."

Just the other day an older guy in a suit came in...said he had not gamed since D&D in high school, and now that the kids had moved out was looking to get back into gaming...

never too old. Heck, my dream retirement is to own a game store...

You'll be surprised at the people you'll find that actually play or want to play mini games. I guess we never really lose that childhood fascination with "army men".

The game challenges you brains, your hobby skills and your wallet. What could be better?

One important aspect of being an older gamer is that while prices are much higher today than when I started playing these games 20+ years ago, I can afford to buy a heck of a lot more minis when I want to now because I am an adult and have a real job with a real salary and not just a poor college student making minimum wage when minimum wage was $3.35 an hour.

Age is only a state of mind my friend. I just got back into the hobby after about 13 years hiatus, I'm 27 now. The best part of gaming as an adult? Instead of waiting for Christmas or birthdays, you can just walk right in to the local game store and pick up whatever you want whenever you want, finances pending of course!

I've also found at this age I'm a lot more invested into the hobby side of things as well. No way in hell i'd have ever shopped around for Dremels or browsed online tutorials on magnetizing for hours on end as a youth, but I sure do now.

Anyways, welcome back to the hobby friend, enjoy yourself!

I think the average age of our group is about 42. Physical age is pretty irrelevant to this game. Mental maturity varies greatly in any group, as I'm sure you know.

I started when I was 31 and I have friend who is playing it in his 60's. He has been playing ancients and FoW for forever but picked up 40K to play more games. This is a hobby for adults in my opinion.

I picked up painting when I was 29, I'm 32 now and been playing for little over a year. I found a local club and most 40k players are 25 or over.

I am dangerously close to 40.

You do not stop playing when you get old, you get old because you stop playing.

This is a hobby. Enjoy it. Real life is overrated no matter your age.

I've just turned 42. I've been board gaming & role-playing since I was 16 but I only started 40K 4 years ago. I honestly wish I'd tried it sooner, I love it. I'm only now just getting into the modelling side and starting to take more time and care over my painting.

You're never too old to game. I've seen wargamers in their 60's & 70's at our club.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.
