That's settled then.

5 boxes of bikes, 3 Drop Pods, 2 Stormtalons and a Stormraven.

Get started Coyote, we expect WIP shots by the end of the week

Otherwise we'll send Nev round again - this time he might not be as polite.

Just tipped 3k points myself, you can't just have 1000 points - don't make Nev come and "visit" you again. That list isn't bad either Nev, though it isn't nearly risky enough and doesn't have enough drop pods

Wow, pushing the hard sell guys. Ease up a bit, or I’ll send you back to the 10th company! And I’m always polite. Even when convincing people to do crazy things…
Bikes are fun, but I don’t see you finding the space for them here. Possibly some Nurgle bikers when you hit chaos?

Crunching the numbers, it’s going to be hard to get what you have in a 1k list.

HQ:
Captain, AA, power sword & C-grav: 135 points (should counts-as that as a relic bade, but going strict WYSWYG here)

Elite:
Vanguard Vets, as modeled: 190

Troop:
10 man Tac squad, ML/F: 160

That’s half your list right there (485 points)

To that you want to add:
Sternguard
Terminators
Dev Squad
<Another troop>
Which if we go bare-bones no upgrades, and use a 5 man scout squad for the other troop puts your total at 930. And that’s no transports in the army, and no guns on the devs. So something is going to have to go. What I might suggest is to work up a 1k list, and then have a 500 point “booster” that you can tack on to play larger games.

Here’s a rough draft on 1k, setting the vanguard aside for a bit

Captain 135

5 Sternguard, 2x C-meltas, razorback w/ TLLC 215
5 man tactical terminators, 1xChainfist, Assault cannon 225

10 man Tac squad, HB/F, rhino 190
5 scouts, snipers and cloaks 70

5 man Dev, 2xLC, 2xML 140

Should put you at 975, so 25 points to play with. Play is pretty simple. Rhino/Razor move up, scouts/devs sit back, termis DS where needed. Needed to steal the ML from the tac squad because there is only one in the dev box, and you don’t want the dev squad to be a random assortment of unfocused weapons.

Adding another 500 points could be something like

MM/M tac squad in a rhino 195
Vanguard 190
Auto/Las Pred 115

Maybe make a list of what you've got for the sake for ease?

Also, what do you want to go in there?

Nev's powers of persuasion are just that good. Though a bolter is a very persuasive item to have......... Yea still planning on doing 1000 pt. lists but that doesn't mean I will stop there. Especially with my main army which can be none other than the sons of Guilliman. Did put two Rhinos on order yesterday too. They may not get much use but they will help me play around with my painting techniques so can always add them to the list if needed.

Apparently I've gotten up to 1000pts quicker than planned which isn't a bad thing. Once the marines I've got are done I will move on to another army.......(got a lot of DKoK in a box that I never got around to doing and I reeeeeeaallly wanna paint my wraith night) but in between them I will continue to recruit for the boys in blue.

Drop pods......... But listening to y'all talk about them I dun wanna! Lol they sound like a complete pain to build.

The storm talons and storm raven are defiantly tempting. So just may have to pick me them eventually

And just for mcmaniak maybe a box of bikes to start out.....with spring here I'm hoping to be able to get on my own bike some .

I had planned on doing the word bearers for chaos but I'm bouncing between them and nurgle

Terminator WIP pics will be here by then end of the weak, hopefully with Kung fu grip and battle damage /1980's tv toys salesman voice.

Thanks guys for all the help and comments helps keep the motivation going strong, that and being held up at bolter point

So the perks of being off work most of the day...play a little warframe on my playstation.... sit around looking at minis, and make another post lol.

Went through and figured out what all I have for the Ultras and figured Id put the list up.
Havnt tallied up the cost yet because that requires math and since I'm off work it can wait a couple hours before I do that.

But according to what all I have here is this list of the Ultramarines below.

1 Captain - yet to be painted ( i have one pretty done but I hated how his cape turned out soooooooo Ima tear off his head and use it on a different one)
1 Terminator Squad- Working on them right now
1 Sternguard Squad - yet to be assembled
3 Tactical Squads - 1 done /1 still needs to be stripped and done/ found another one that has been primed but needs to be redone
1 Vanguard Squad - Done
1 Assault Squad- needs to be stripped of the primer and redone
1 Venerable Dreadnaught w/plasma cannon atm( pics below for all you peoples)
1 Devestator squad- needs to be assembled
2 Rhinos' - will be here by friday

see this is why i dont need to go digging through my closet, I find more stuff to do lol. One of the Tactical Squads and the Assault squad were a friend of mine that I was gonna teach how to paint some. He didnt really get alot done did he? The primer he did ended up being really thick so they get to get baths. The other tactical squad that needs to be stripped you all will remember are my test models from the first page. They did their job well in helping with the color blue so they deserve having new life brought into them instead of being stashed away in a bin. May have to come up with something to tell that squad apart, sentimental reasons, if it wasnt for them this entire blog would'nt be moving along.

The dreadnaught has been magnetized just havnt gotten around to finishing up the other arms yet (I'm so behind on stuff now that I think about it)

Overall I think thats pretty much it for the moment, always new stuff to buy and new stuff to paint.

Last but not least here in the Venerable Dreadnaught, (only a couple nit picky things left to do like finishing the base, that seems to be a pattern of mine that will have to be remedied)

Love the dread mate although if I had to puck I would say his feet look to similar to the base meaning either the feet are too grey of the base is somehow metalic?

Great work so far though...

I’ve always done the toes in the same blue as the rest of the dread. Done as grey, it looks like he’s utilizing some blending stealth technology stolen from the Tau.

If it wasn’t on a grey urban base, It wouldn’t stand out as much.

I agree with Nev (as much as it pains me ) but the feet look a bit camoflage-y. Whether they are blue or any other colour would be fine.

Whats up guys been a few days since I've gotten anything done or made a post work ran me ragged....don't they know I have painting and all to get done!!
Finally have enough done to post some stuff up.

First off with everyones recommendation The feet of the Dreadnaught have been painted lol. I think they came out a touch darker than the rest of him but we're just gonna say that its cause he's so big it creates a shadow over his feet.

Secondly and finally got a test Terminator done. The hairspray trick works though I don't know if I'm completely happy with it or not. I will do the rest of the squad this way and that may work out any kinks I found with it. That and I can stand to have one mini done one way and then the rest of the squad done differently.

For those that wish to use it I'm going to throw down a quick step by step that way atleast its here for your tinkering pleasure.

Step one -of course prime the mini with whatever you use to prime with (mainly white)
Step two- and this one is up to you depending on the color I used Vallejo Silver (which would be Mithril Silver in the old GW line)
You could use any Silver color you want , Gun Metal Grey would probably look good too
Step three and this is the important one- Hair spray, any kind that has a continuous spray, I stole my wifes. You want good coverage but you don't want it to pool in any creases or recesses.
LET IT DRY COMPLETLY
Learned that one the hard way... though it does give some pretty cool cracks in the next layer......
Step three- Paint your Mini as Normal ( pretty simple)
Step four- Ok so this is where it gets kinda tricky, Use a old brush with short bristles and dip it in water. Wipe off any excess cause you don't want it to soak the model and you begin to LIGHTLY move the brush back and forth over the area of paint you wish to remove. (If you press to hard you will go through the hairspray and down to the bare plastic, found that out in a few spots)
Step Five- (Optional) I went back in some of the places that went to deep and did a quick touch up with the Silver to get the bare medal look back.
Step Six -Seal the mini in a matte (or gloss) finish

Hope this helps anyone wishing to attempt it.

Looking at it to me it kinda looks like a old metal mini that has been well handled and the paint has chipped off....... though isn't that the effect your kinda going for with this technique anyway?

Oh well on to the rest of the Squad and putting together some more the ranks of the Ultramarines continue to swell!

Nice work on the dread mate.mim nog totally sold on the termies though tbh. It may be as simple as lighting etc. the head looks very flat which may not help the other effect. Have you washed the head with a black oil yet?

Thanks the feet really did make a difference so thanks on the suggestion!.

As far as the Terminator goes. It does look a little better in person because you can see the silver edges from the paint chipping better but it still is kind blah.
I used a grey wash and then retouched some of the highlights but I agree completely that it just doesn't look like a walking war-machine for lack of a better way to put it.

I still want to drill out the holes in the gun barrel, couldn't find my drill bit last night so just painted them on quickly to get the post. I think I may do the black wash real quick and then touch back up with white. It wont hurt to do it anyway lol. Thanks for the tip! Ya still need to loan me out a couple bikes... slap some blue paint on em and they'll be good to go.

Haha, my bikes will never be blue. Rotted brown rust maybe (just to upset nev) haha

Maybe touch the silver bits with some black to show depth of damage...

I’ve been mulling over that termi, trying to figure out why it struck me as “off”. Some of it might be the picture, and the stark white backdrop. Very bight and antiseptic for a beat up marine.

But I think it’s the fact that he’s been worked over enough that his paint is chipping off, but besides that, he’s clean. Look at his base. Do you think you could walk on that in a massive suit of exo-armor and not get your feet dusty? No soot, carbon scoring, or blood. It’s like he had time for a shower, but not to freshen up his paint.

Another thing that just came to mind is the condition of the armor under the paint. It’s a testament to how solid that suit is made. It’s been under fire heavy enough to blast the paint off, but there are no gouges or pock marks where bullets and/or claws scraped off it.

The problem is not with what you’ve done, but with the Pandora’s box you’ve opened: Weathering and realism. When I see marines in parade ground clean paint jobs, I accept that. It’s not accurate to what would be seen on the battlefield, and that’s fine. But once you start to play the realism card, I start to view the mini under a different light. Anything that’s not real then stands out. It’s a slippery slope.

Nice shoes Dreadnought, the match your outfit

As for the damage and weathering, it was amibitious and you went for it. It's a good attempt, though again Nev says in detail pretty much what I was thinking.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The blue feet really did make it stand out so much better on the base.

As for the Terminator...I'm in complete agreement with everything. I mean it looks ok but it looks either off or unfinished for lack of a better way to put it. I did rewash the helm with a black and bring the white back in to add more lines and depth but like Nevelon said he looks like he had time for a shower but not a paint job lol. I've got some pigments I may throw on him but there are so many different ways to go its like trying to figure out what else to do. Luckily he is the only Terminator done up atm, the others are only primed. I may keep tinkering around with him to find that good balance because I'm really not satisfied with him for being all beat up.
