Group 2:
Chaos Terminators (190pts)

Terminator
Reaper Autocannon, Power Weapon

Terminator
Power weapon, Combi-bolter

Terminator
Chainfist, Combi-bolter

Terminator Champion
Lightning Claw, Power Fist

Group 1 I usually deep strike with a sorcerer lord
Group 2 I usually deep strike to shoot something and then close in for assault.

The power weapons for both groups are Power Axes, both groups have anti vehicle weapons.

Do I have success with them? Yes - but it requires careful planning

What do I find to be the best counter for terminators? - My squads of 20 cultists. On the charge that's 30 attacks and they make SS/TH terminators cry.

So uh, there's this thing called fun.....

Not everyone plays tournament lists all the time. Not every opponent plays tournament lists all the time. Even if it was a tournament, only 1 person ever wins a tournament, and judging by how 40k players talk about tournaments, you'd think every single person won every single tournament all the time.

Not every opponent plays a mathematically optimized min / max list all the time.

Sometimes people play for fun.. I know that's a foreign concept to some people on here, but sometimes people want to play something cool they thought up. Sometimes people want the challenge of playing something they know won't do well, but they want to do it anyways. The topic of this thread was to ask for tactics, what works for you, what advice do others have. If you're completely against Terminators, say so, and leave the thread.

Well, I played the Spartan CSM Terminator Assault Bomb this weekend, against an Imperial Fists army. It worked well, at least in this one game. We played at 2,000 points.

My opponent had a couple tac squads, a scout squad, a terminator squad, 3 vindicators, Lysander, a couple dreadnoughts and a couple razorbacks.

I had 10 MoS terminators with 2 heavy flamers / combi-weapons and IoE, and the 2 Terminator Chaos Lords with their artifacts. The actual cost of all this was more like 1,200 points. The rest of my army was cultists and Heldrakes, I also brought a dakkapred but it didn't play much of a role in the game.

The Spartan lost 2 hull points on the way up the board. It helped that it was decked out with weapons, because I did get a weapon destroyed result on one of them. I took the following, and it lost the HK missile:

- Twin linked heavy flamer
- Pindle-mounted combi-bolter
- Frag assault launchers
- HK missile
- ... the plasma resistance thing

The Spartan parked itself in the middle of his army on turn 3. When it did, the following happened:

- The Terminators wiped out one of the tac squads. The Heavy Flamers took out 4 marines, and the terminators did 6 unsaved wounds on the charge.
- The CL with the black mace challenged the sergeant in the other tac squad, tied them up.
- The Spartan shot up one of the vindicators, blowing it up with quad lasers.
- The other CL assaulted a Razorback, killing it with a power fist.

From there, it was downhill for my opponent. The Spartan held up against a lot of other shots, my Heldrakes wiped out the rest of his troops, and the Terminators + the CL with the Black Mace were able to put down Lysander and his Terminators while only losing a couple models. It ended with him really only having his dreads and a Razorback on the board.

So, a few things to think about. Yeah, I realize there are a lot of ways to blow up lists like this, but I could see how most people are not going to be prepared for it. Being able to pretty much ignore melta weapons was important in this game, my opponent did not know Chaos vehicles could do that. So there was an OMG moment for my opponent when he realized he needed other things in his army to counter. OTOH, the Spartan did a great job shooting up other vehicles throughout the game. Twin linked quad lascannons are no joke.

Second, I was really surprised how resilient the terminators were. They survived the initial assault against the tac marines without taking any wounds, they survived a couple rounds of vindicator fire without taking any wounds, they survived a round with Lysander and 5 loyalist termies and only took 2 wounds. Previously, I had only taken squads of up to 5, which were not horrible but not overwhelming. They were overwhelming on the charge, hitting first and saving all their wounds in melee.

Third, yeah, it was great being able to assault 3 separate units coming out of a vehicle. This was actually the most important part for me, seeing what the Spartan could do about mobility. It just wrecked him, not being able to shoot at the squads that were locked in combat, and not being able to score solid hits on the Spartan.

I know this could have gone differently against Tau or Eldar, but it was a good tactic.

I just started pondering this, would it be better to invest in a heldrake than some terminators?

Hahahahahha, the answer you'll probably get here is yes. Context may be important, but you can't really go wrong with a single heldrake in your army as long as you're playing in an 850+ pt game or so
