This, with the usually-stronger right arm used for hitting thing means only the left hand is free for shooting.
Left-handedness is learned.
During important stages of the brain developing, handedness swaps around a few times. If you learn to write at the time your lefty if dominant, that's what you'll use. Most people do something the 'wrong' way, and I am all over the shop. Since handedness is usually determined by which hand you write with, I'm a lefty.
As a side-note, leftiness is roughly 10% of the Western population, but at least half of my technically-minded colleagues are left-handed. It's been the same at university, and in most jobs since. Lefties seem to be more capable of maths or similar thinking (
IMHO).
