I've always assumed that the close combat weapon was held in the dominant hand and the gun was held in the weak hand, so I'd say there are a lot of lefty models.

This, with the usually-stronger right arm used for hitting thing means only the left hand is free for shooting.

Left-handedness is learned.
During important stages of the brain developing, handedness swaps around a few times. If you learn to write at the time your lefty if dominant, that's what you'll use. Most people do something the 'wrong' way, and I am all over the shop. Since handedness is usually determined by which hand you write with, I'm a lefty.

As a side-note, leftiness is roughly 10% of the Western population, but at least half of my technically-minded colleagues are left-handed. It's been the same at university, and in most jobs since. Lefties seem to be more capable of maths or similar thinking (IMHO).

Religion is probably the reason there are less lefties around in the real world today. My dad literally had the left-handedness beaten out of him by nuns in Catholic school, something that happened surprisingly often when you look into it. I can only imagine being left handed in a Puritan society or something similar haha, it's annoying enough dealing with right handed desks and not be able to find lefty guitars.
