The analogy is actually pretty accurate, but my thoughts are that the shadow is more like an oil slick.. it seperates the water form the atmosphere (not quite what happens as the shadow is far more violent than that),
And yet it will never reach the bottom as whilst it can completely MUCK UP the surface the bottom of the pond is very far away...
I figure just by cutting immaterium from the materium you mess with the gods.. but the two never really interact directly.
