It was about 92-94 when I saw the space crusade advert on TV, it became my Xmas gift from Santa and then followed an infinite subscription to white dwarf just observing and enjoying all the heavy graphics and detailed models over the next 7 years.
Then I took a pause and began again collecting minis in 2012 where I had list most of my older minis Nd had to collect from scratch again.
Currently I'm still a slow patient collector and an even slower painter

I had friends who picked up a fantasy starter box together (Orcs and Empire), and it started from there. I eventually picked up dwarfs, but then eventually somehow we got interested in 40k. They still play fantasy a bit, but I'm 40k only now.
Thankfully the entire time we all liked different armies. Weird thing is I'm the only imperium player.
Ah, the heady days when a Wraithlord was my biggest worry on the table.

Friends were getting into it back in 2005 so I gave it a look but didn't stick with it so left it alone. Came back to it myself later, painting was pretty calming and I enjoyed the background.

Played a lot of Dawn of War, found out that there's a tabletop and wound up convincing my grandma to get me Assault on Black Reach as a highschool graduation gift.

My auntie worked in a local toy shop that got the stuff in and made it clear to my Dad that it could be got very, very cheaply from her. Either that or she owed him money.
Anyway, I had weekly drops of handbags filled with blister packs and pokemon cards. I remember my first Helion being covered in a nice thick coat of bronze and purple.

I had already played several games with my friends models and we also played other Games Workshop games prior - but it was reading the (Realm of Chaos) story of the Emperor versus Horus, where his arm get's torn off etc, that hooked me for life.
That was in the late 80's and I still love 40K to this day...

Frequented a Comic book shop at a mall. One night I stopped in and hear all this yelling in the back. I look and people were playing a new game Gorkamorka on a table. It looked like a demolition derby game.
I bought the game immediately.
When I realized Gorkamorka was a small part of the whole 40k line and there was also a Fantasy version. I looked over the rank of blisters and settled for Chaos Dwarf (couldn't resist the big hats!). When G Dub stopped supporting Chaos Dwarfs I switched to Orcs (cause I had lots of models painted for chaos dwarf army).
Eventually I jumped over to 40k orks cause most people at store played it, and I had fantasy orcs and Gorkamorka figures and vehicles I could use. I still use those models now about 16 years later.

Homicidal Veteran Blood Angel Assault Marine

After many hours playing heroquest, i got into space crusade. I had 3 different choices of marine - red, blue and yellow. Needless to say after some time spent with the wargear cards, i came to the realization that the red marines were better suited to close combat (force field and bionic arm). Fast forward to discovering a white dwarf magazine in the local newsagent, and lo and behold theres some sort of company associated with it that produces tons of games in this line. The rise and fall of a gw fan.

Man, I really miss these specialists games GW used to produce and (somewhat) support. They were such a good draw of people from all sorts of different backgrounds, as the investment to play was so much lower. Plus, the games were just so damn characterful! Each model counted and the conversions you put into them had significant impacts on how they functioned in the games.

Totally agree with that. They used to have those games as downloads on their site but I havnt been able to find them in a long time. Hated the metal models for them (necromunda/bloodbowl) because of the difficulty of conversions but found converting 40k and fantasy plastics into them were very easy and often looked better.
My old beastman necromunda gang looked nice and the chaos cultists from DV work great.
