I feel the younger crowd's pain when force-fed the mainstream 80's stuff.
It was not so pleasant for some of us older folks either.
At least it was a time of experimentation so some truly unique stuff was made.

I think in that decade I was introduced and then slowly steered away from metal because of these:
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man’s Party
Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go
Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again
Public Image Limited - Rise
Front 242 - Headhunter
Ministry - Stigmata
Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi`s Dead.
The Jam - Town Called Malice
Sisters of Mercy - Lucretia My Reflection
Laibach - Live is Life
PWEI (Pop Will Eat Itself) - Wise Up Sucker
Shriekback - Nemesis
Tones on Tail - Go!
Viletones - Screaming Fist
Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia
Ministry - Everyday is Halloween

It seemed in the 80's the established music genres were challenged by a whole bunch of experimental stuff... exciting times.

I think now that "hard" music may be the better description for gaming music.
I find my preference for Industrial music works well and anyone's Death Metal will be equally serviceable.

I grew up in the 80's - I was in Junior High, High School and College.

I played AD&D right from the start.

I never really encountered anyone who seriously thought anything like what was stated in the OP.

I grew up in Massachusetts - maybe that...helped?

Many of us had to deal with a lot during the 80s in terms of the beliefs much of the country (world) had about our music and our games. I'll try to remember some of what i dealt with and if /as others post their experiences, i am likely to remember more to post. I'll start with a broad overview and a few examples.

Beliefs in my area- small town in WV.
-Heavy metal music is satanic. If you play it backwards, its the devil telling you what to do.
-All metal muscicians are cult leaders out to get your souls.

-Games- satanic. Your characters become you and take over your body making you do as they desire.
-You actually become your characters and turn evil.
-If your character dies, you die.
- That you summoned real life demons from hell and sacrificed animals.
-That gamers were constantly on the lookout for blonde haired blue eyed virgins to rape/sacrifice.

Getting lateand I'm not fully coherent. this oughtta be enough to get us started. If you were there for it what have you heard from those who were and remember?

I feel like you're messing with us. These people have to be the most ***-backwards religious nuts i've heard of. Even when i went to a private school in south carolina during the 90's which was a christian school they were totally ok with video games. They probably didn't like heavy metal but they most likely didn't see video games as that bad.

Of course i remember many had issues with the whole ouiji board things and other stuff. Honestly i don't think many took it that seriously.

Sat and watched Bill and Ted with the daughter just a couple of weeks ago (it is on NetFlix!) and she appreciated the humor, especially for an 'older movie'. She also liked the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (also on NetFlix).

Seeing as she is 12, I don't think she is quite ready for Spicoli and crew.

I was a kid during the 80's but wasnt really old enough to do the whole music gig thing and it was the electric dance rave/house scene that caught me in the early 90s. But i played games in the 80's and my parents were both evangelical Christians and had no problem with me enjoying a constant diet of Jackson and livingstone fighting fantasy books I also played D&D and was pretty early on the fantasy battle scene and moved to 40k shortly after it came out. The only metal I remember was the bolt thrower album cover which was immense.

I never understood the extreme metal genres. But many dont get dance music either. I liked the girls at house parties better than metal concerts too!
