The sad thing is that it takes, maybe, a year to get a Welding certificate. Lots of these jobs are incredibly easy to get some sort of certification in and start making money. Thats maybe a couple grand in school fees, if you pay full tuition.
My little sister does welding. Not as a profession, but it would probably be portable enough.

Seriously looking at welding profession for I am starting to hate people I have to deal. Figure someone would wait till I am done welding a seam/spot to ask me a question instead of answering two to twenty questions in a short span of time. Navy offering major money

Welders also have a strong position in terms of wage negotiation due to their rarity right now. Its also, from what I hear, got pretty flexible hours.
Also, I hear that if you also have a Scuba certification you can make even more bank.

You have much to learn young Padawan.... There are a TON of downsides to this.
The biggest one: who is paying for the school? Who's paying the electrical? Where's the employee salary coming from? What instructor in their right mind would continue working under that sort of system?

Watchout for the Jelly Fishes...

April, 1998
Hi Sue,
Just another note from your bottom dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this:
We have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of gak sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temp. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a damn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is I take the hose and stuff it down the back of my neck. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a jacuzzi.
Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my ass started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my ass started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened to me. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit.
This is even worse than the poison ivy I once had under a cast. Now I had that hose down my back. I don't have any hair on my back, so the jellyfish couldn't get stuck to my back. My ass crack was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into my ass. I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the comms. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he along with 5 other divers were laughing hysterically. Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make 3 agonizing water stops totaling 35 minutes before I could come to the surface.
I got to the surface wearing nothing but my brass helmet. My suit and gear were tied to the bell. When I got on board the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to shove it up my ass when I get in the chamber. The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't gak for two days because my donkey-cave was swollen shut. I later found out that this could easily have been prevented if the suction hose was placed on the leeward side of the ship.
Anyway, the next time you have a bad day at the office, think of me. Think about how much worse your day would be if you were to shove a jellyfish up your ass. I hope you have no bad days at the office. But if you do, I hope that thought will make it a little more tolerable. Take care, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Love,
Brian

Ok, so I am not against this, as long as it is DONE RIGHT.
Strict standards. Students have to maintain a C average. They cannot get in trouble with the law.
We also need a plan to make this affordable. And I don't mean "This will pay for itself in 10 years" Obamacare bull crap. I mean we can start this tomorrow, and we're not borrowing any new money for it, affordable.
We do that, then send the kids to college.

In theory this is a good idea. But in practice, what would it really accomplish? As already said, it's hard enough for people with 4+ year degrees to find jobs. In the past few years, I've felt more and more that there is too much emphasis on "going to college" as the be-all-end-all of what to do after high school. In my parents' generation, high school was what prepared you for the real world. Now, high school is just about shoving you off into college. If this new program provides incentives to go to trade schools instead, that might end up being even better. We need more people educated in how to actually do things, as not everything is cozy office jobs.

The buildings and teachers are already there, I wouldn't expect some giant influx of new people from this.
It's a decent proposal and I would like to see it tied to unemployment benefits as well. If I had a choice between someone being on unemployment for a couple years not finding a job and being in the exact same place 2 years later or someone on unemployment having 2 years of school paid for and having skills two years later it's a no-brainer.

Yes, the facilities are there... however, with their use, things wear down/break. Someone's gotta clean the crappers, and supplies aren't free, they cost money. As do light bulbs, etc. And I wouldn't expect a large influx of new teachers, rather I'd almost expect an exodus. Again, where is their salary coming from?
IIRC, there already is an "unemployment benefit" program like this in place... though, it may be tied to a handicap that prevents a person from doing the work they previously did, and YMMV depending on what State we're talking about.
This is almost a situation where I agree more and more with Mike Rowe. College isn't for everyone, but Work is. Personally, I think school districts need more money put into the "high school age" (some places that's 9-12, others 10-12) schools, but on the provision that it brings back a lot of the programs that many of us "old timers" grew up with: shop class, woodshop, home ec, etc. Give students the time/place to find out what they like, and show viable and realistic options to pursue those things once they are done with grade 12. I still remember to this day, when I informed my school guidance counselor (who, surprise surprise was pushing college) that I had enlisted in the military... She didn't take it to well
