Which is a whole other thing: personally, I prefer a series of paintbrushes that are locally stocked, because I don't always have spares of everything, and being able to walk into a store and buy a replacement (or another size, whatever) is of some value. It is also, frankly, a reason I don't use Reaper paints -- they are only sold by 1 store, and their stock gets pretty old; whereas Vallejo is in a couple of stores, P3 is in 3 or 4 stores, and Citadel is in every store that matters.
I think the closest store that might have 8404 or S7 would be 30 minutes away, I never checked because I prefer to order online.
However the paint problem is huge, most of the paints I buy ( GW) are at least a year (or two) old when I get them it's really something I would like to avoid dealing with.
Flip the GW bottle over, and look at the (c) on the bottom of the bottle. Don't buy anything pre-2013, and if everything is 2011 (and earlier), just ask the store to order fresh paint in for you. This is what I do!
Sadly, in Canada, I don't know an online discounter for premium brushes that also has free shipping (even given a reasonable size order). It is actually cheaper for me to go to a store. Odd, huh? :X

A size 6 r&c is still cheaper than a size 000 w&n even with 20% off the w&n and nothing off the r&c.
I was comparing the recommended price from both manufacturers directly. Seems perfectly fair (although r&c dont seem to supply stockists that I'm aware of).
Theres actually not a spell check function included as part of the forum. That may be part of your browser? Apologies to the sp&gr nazi's for mis spelling while calling you on dis-information.
Nice 180 on your stance though You did specifically suggest that R&C were a ripoff because theyre giving you less hair for the same money. Which is 100% not the case. I called you on it ~ to avoid the dis information being spread. That is all,
I just corrected the sentence you were referring to, it seems I typed price twice when I intended to type same size, lower price, less hair. My bad, it wasn't what I meant at all.
For the matters that concern us (i.e. sizes 2 to 0000000), rosemary is slightly cheaper than the most well known brushes.
Whether 30% off is worth considering another brand than the two most recognized ones is up to anyone's preference.

I check the bottles as well and do buy mostly 11/2013 ones, but still, I find that rather "old" already.
I didn't get free shipping on my last order, but 5 bucks shipping from Germany to Belgium for 5 brushes doesn't really seem that steep

Try a reputable online seller, like Amazon for example.
The only way you can get a bad S7 or 8404 is if somebody already opened it I think, they have excellent quality control.

I have a blue handled W&N series 7 next to me its probably 20 years old, possibly more. Its spent 10+ years in a box but its still pretty good,
I had relegated it to washes and base coating but a dip in airbrush cleaner and its looking pretty good again.
I would really like to replace it with an identical one but I fear a new one would not match.
I often paint with italeri synthetics, I like the stiffness (hurr hurr) but they don't last. (the tips curl)
I also have a few longer bristled kolinsky sable brushes I hate due to the flex.
My advice. Try a few cheap brushes till you know what kind of brush you like then find a good quality bush with the same configuration. I like short stiff brushes with a angular tip, you may not.

Not really all that ballsy - people have tested them, just not as many as have tested the 'big two' (again, they're a much smaller and younger, but neither unknown nor completely new, company). The vast majority of reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with the worst amounting to no more than "I prefer brand X because reason Y." Their name has cropped up in every brush-selection thread (even discounting my own posts - we know damned well that I like them, by now ) I can recall over the past few years and not a single person has thought them bad. I doubt any of the big painting blogs have given them the time of day, but more than just the few Dakkanauts who have posted about them in this thread use them.
Granander: If you need brushes, go for it! The brushes are cheap enough that shipping accounts for much of the price, so I'd suggest making the most of a single order, if you place one. Along with the Series 33 Kolinsky brushes, I'm quite fond of the Series 99 'Pure Sable' (i.e. red sable). They're great workhorses to keep around when you want to preserve your 'good' brushes, but don't want that to mean resorting to that hooked nylon junker you keep around for spreading glue. Seem to have a slightly shorter taper to the tip and a fatter belly, which makes them great for basecoating and applying area-specific washes. I've painted entire miniatures with a S.99 #2, having intended just to use it for basecoating but never finding a reason to put it down! I think they have a badger hair line, as well - a filbert or scumbler/scrumbler (seen it both ways, not sure if both are correct) is great for drybrushing, My new favorite drybrush is a #8 badger scumbler, although from a different brand. They just seem to shed half-dry paint, which is a godsend for a drybrush, and have a nice balance of bristle thickness and stiffness - more snap and longevity than sable or nylon, much finer application than hog hair. Badgers may be ornery SOBs, but they make for some nice brushes.

Weeeeell... need is a strong word. I love my S7's and I am trying out the Ichiban brushes right now, I also have an assortment of cheaper brushes for dirtywork (and lending to others at the club). BUT, I am a collector by nature. They seem to be a nice company with good quality and excellent service and that is always something to support. So the short of it, I have more money than brains and painting skills so I try to buy happiness
