Death-Dealing Devastator

I make a point of writing up all of my characters. The following are also due to appear in fiction before too long.

Shadow Captain Edric Korbijn of the 6th Company, Master of Rites

Born: 712.M41
Inducted: 719.M41
Initiated: 751.M41
Ennobled: 864.M41
Slain: 952.M41
Psychic Powers: None

Equipment: The Nightshell (Artificer Armour), Spite (Master-Crafted Bolter), Black Quills (Power Blades), Frag and Krak Grenades, Bolt Pistol, Combat Blade.

Talents: Stealth (Wraithwalking), marksmanship, Bolter Drill, Mechanised and Infantry combat tactics, Raven Guard Chapter history, traditions and rites.

Philosophy: The Emperor was a great hero; an exemplary leader and a man for whom time and space are little more than obstacles to be casually stepped over, but still a man. It is vital that the worst excesses of human superstition be suppressed among the Adeptus Astartes, as Space Marines must be free of any behavioural neuroses, and must avoid the tendency to fall into damaging practices which invite the attentions of warp-things.

Ethics: Keep the humans close, for they remind an Astartes of his duty and honour. By allowing certain choice humans to learn of the practices of the Chapter, a Captain may ensure that he and his men are remembered favourably in legend.

From the Writings of Collingwood (927.M41)

To say that Edric Korbijn is a hero shows a fundamental misunderstanding of both him and the term. In Korbijn an observer will find no great excesses of character but a formidable historical knowledge and a complex and astute mind. He is wise and amicable in person, but given to silence where speech would be prudent and seriousness in moments of humour. When he does speak, however, it is with a calm authority and respectful perspicacity.

On the battlefield, Korbijn’s style is quite at odds with the typical conception people have of the Adeptus Astartes. Korbijn’s squads use their transports to circumvent the enemy, striking them from unexpected angles with flawlessly-timed volleys.

Unfortunately, Korbijn invariably has more battlefield experience and tactical cleverness than a given Guard officer and so will typically disregard orders he is given in favour of following his own ends. This does not endear him to other commanders, but many have felt the benefits of a sudden and unexpected flanking manoeuvre by the Shadow-Captain and his black-armoured spectres.

Grand Marshal Lord Hubert Montague Bracegirdle Thistlethwaite

Born: Fallax, 863.M41
Ennobled: Fallax, 890.M41

Equipment: Twin Hellpistols, Carapace Armour and Hephzibah the horse.

Talents: Grand strategy, pitched and defensive warfare.

Philosophy: If the Chaos reigning over the Gallesian Empire is any indicator of the alternative, it would be foolish for the men and women of Fallax to be found wanting in the service of this distant Emperor.

Ethics: It is the duty of an officer to spend the lives of his men well and to earn fame and glory for his country and family. Men are the base currency of the battlefield and their lives are forfeit in victory and defeat, but they are to be respected as much as any other commodity, although most commodities are markedly less likely to steal from or betray their owner.

Shas’el Bork’an Yano Xao L’ing: ‘Commander Moongleam’

Born: 940.M41 (Bork’an)
Inducted: 948.M41 (Bork’an)
Died: 978.M41 (Bork’an)

Equipment: Combat Armour, Pulse Rifle, Markerlight, Target Lock, XV84 Crisis Battlesuit with Plasma Rifles, Drone Controller and Marker Drones, XV9 Hazard Battlesuit with Pulse Submunitions Rifle, Shield Generator, Drone Controller and Blacklight Drones

Talents: Kauyon and Mont’ka Tactics, marksmanship and survivalism.

Biography: Born to a Fire Caste community in the erudite Bork’an sept, Yano was always a robust and resourceful example of the Tau species. Though shy and introverted compared to her equals, she completed her training and entered the Fire Caste at the standard age as a physically and mentally resilient soldier.

Yano served as a Shas’la for four years, an abnormally long time in Tau Military terms, before pursuing the career of a Fireblade, rather than advance into the use of battlesuits. However, she was forced to hurriedly take up the hero's mantle in 978.M41, in a disastrous campaign which would eventually claim her life.

Philosophy: The galaxy is scientific and empirical. There is nothing that Tau science cannot explain, given enough time and evidence. Gods and Daemons are a fallacy created by unenlightened minds.

Ethics: It is the destiny of the Tau to bring enlightenment to the other races of the galaxy, and the duty of the Fire Caste to liberate civilisations from ignorance and tyranny, if the Tau Empire cannot be relied upon as an efficient, effective, philosophical, pragmatic and compassionate force then it will never be trusted by the civilisations of the galaxy. That trust is what the Tau must earn, whatever the cost.

Ultramarine Librarian with Freaky Familiar

Name: Acting-Captain Hadris Aurelius

Commander of Strikeforce Praetoria, a detachment mostly consisting of Space Marines from Ultramarines 2nd Company

Last Recorded Assignment: The Charadon Campaign, unofficially called the Crusade of Fury.

Wargear: Artificer armour, Aegis of Praetoria (a relic storm shield), paragon blade, Litura (mastercrafted grav-pistol), combat gladius

Last recorded image:

Description:
The rank of Acting-Captain is mainly honorific. In truth, Aurelius' rank is that of Veteran Sergeant, hailing from the Ultramarines' 1st Company. However, in the light of the conflicts yet to come in the 41st Millienium, Chapter Master Marneus Calgar has decided to halve the Ultramarines' 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Companies and appoint the most senior 1st Company Veterans to gain some command experience, whilst the other half of the company is left in it's Captain's hands.

Hadris Aurelius was given the honour of taking the vaunted 2nd Company into battle with him after the previous Acting-Captain, Francis Dramorian, was killed on Terroria. The honour of this new command weighs down heavily on him. To be charged with commanding the most prestigious of the Ultramarines' Battle Companies is something he never anticipated, and quite frankly, doesn't feel up to the task.
It doesn't help that Captain Cato Sicarius, the de facto leader of the 2nd Company, holds Aurelius personally responsible for any deaths that occur to his company, something the veteran is keenly aware of. As such, Aurelius is very concious about his brethren's lives and well-being, taking extraordinary lengths to guarantee their safety.
Still, the veteran is known to be exceedingly prejudiced and vengeful against Orks in particular. He personally hunted down and gutted Warboss Skulkrusha on the world of Terroria for the death of Dramorian and the other dead of Strikeforce Praetoria, and the greenskin's return from the grave drove the Acting-Captain out to hunt him down.
During the events of the Charadon Crusade, Aurelius hunted down and killed the ork Warboss on Sandfall, at great cost to himself and his strikeforce. Other acts of valour were performed by the commander during the campaign, such as the attempted hunt for the Gallor Prime Vault, the foiled assassination attempt on the late Lord General Zonand, and the Hybrid Assault on Brackus.

The Acting-Captain is typically amiable, born of a noblewoman from Espandor and a PDF Captain from Talassar, possessing both a level of etiquette which is passable for an Imperial noble, yet also a deep-set respect of the Imperium's human warriors. Indeed, on Terroria, a firm comradeship was born between the newly-appointed commander and Colonel Halter of the Cadian 13th Remnants Regiment. However, Aurelius is still more than acceptable for a whole squad of guardsmen to die to spare the life of one of his Astartes and, although it pains him to do so, would trade another Space Marine's life to keep his company intact.
This once-sanguinity has also been jeopardised over the course of the Charadon Crusade, following a close encounter with the insidious Hybrid species, and a Chaos Sorcerer of the Remnants Warband taking an interest in Aurelius. The Ultramarine was repeatedly approached, and sometimes saved, by the mysterious figure, and despite Aurelius' insistence on remaining loyal and resisting the Sorcerer's influence, Aurelius' mental state has severely degraded.

Strikeforce Praetoria is also accompanied by a number of 1st Company Veterans, to supplement the Demi-Company's effectiveness. Sticking fairly closely to the tenets of the Codex Astartes, to reduce unnecessary losses from his taskforce, Aurelius tends to prefer Drop Pod assaults from the Strike Cruiser Valin's Revenge, a manoeuvre known as Steel Rain, bringing the strikeforce as close to the enemy as possible to maximise initial Alpha Strike casualties in a way demonstrated, but never bettered, by Cato Sicarius. He also works well in boarding actions and void combat, stemming from a history of experience in a Breacher Squad and in cleansing ancient space hulks.
His personal retinue is equipped for this, armed with boarding shields and power axes or swords. Whilst the loadout for the squad isn't optimal in open warzones, Aurelius has never seen fit to equip them otherwise.

Acting-Captain Aurelius wears ornately crafted artificer armour, both crafted from his original suit of power armour and relics dating back to since the Heresy, featuring the helmet crest of his captaincy and his personal heraldry (a golden half-sunburst over the Chapter sigil) on his pauldron. He wields an incredibly potent storm shield alongside a paragon blade recovered by his battle brother, Lord Marshall Karak of the Black Templars, crafted with the emblems of his Chapter in the pommel and guard.

Current Status: Undisclosed, unconfirmed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If any of you here want to see more of Acting-Captain Aurelius, feel free to see what him and other commanders have been up to in the Crusade of Fury thread, in Dakka Fiction, and my sig!

Of course, the finale is, as of posting, being written up, and Aurelius' story is not finished yet...

Name: Captain Mikael Fabian
Rank: Third Company Captain, Master of the Arsenal
Wargear: MkVIII Artificer Armour, Power Fist, Master Crafted Boltgun, Iron Halo.
Biography: Older than Marneus Calgar himself and Tyrannic War Veteran, Mikael Fabian led the Ultramarines Third Company through their darkest hour, and lost his face completely. Fabian lost his right arm in a conflict with a Tyranid Warrior, and it has since been replaced with cybernetics and it is for this reason he has a Power Fist, to strike vengeance with his new, improved arm. Fabian places huge stress on his Company to make full use of Space Marine Bikes and Centurion Warsuits as alternatives to standard Devastator or Assault Squads as he believes that to face the Tyranid foe, be must have thick armour, and big guns.

Fabian looks at the famed Cato Sicarius like a little kid, because he doesn't know loss or failure, and has yet to fall over. This key quality could be the difference between Severus or Sicarius becoming Chapter Master.

Troubled By Non-Compliant Worlds

Name: Khedepses; aka the exile

Rank: Phaeron of the Nehenmut dynasty (debated)

Age: 60 million *

Wargear: Command Barge, Warscythe, phase shifter, Phylactery

during the war of secession, the Nehenmut fought under the command of a dynasty who's name has long since been lost to time, a minor noble at the time, Khedepses thought this infighting was pointless. He saw squabbling lords and petty rivalries that brought shame to the Necrontyr. Though he dutifully followed orders for his dynasty, and was promoted to control a sizeable force of warriors, a spark of rebellion and ambition had been lit in the generals heart. When the Necrons began the great sleep Khedepses was placed in control of one of the Nehenmut's tomb worlds. Khedepses and nearby tomb worlds awoke in early M41. Khedepses saw the opportunities this new universe and its chaotic state offered him and took control of the nearby tomb worlds forcibly. He seceded from the greater Nehenmut dynasty and began a civil war. A civil war he can only hope to win if he can stop the belligerent space marines from threatening his domain. After they are dealt with, and the other dynasties see his might and skill, who's to say he won't be unstoppable?

It's sort of similar to Sengoku era Japan with all the different warlords fighting for power whilst having increased contact with strange foreigners.

Ultra-Ultramarines are a great idea.
