Perhaps, if the defendant is incapable of making decisions for their defense, for their legal guardian to take care of that? The parents weren't remotely present.

Not to mention part of what's messed up is that for several of the forced confessions, he's locked in a room for hours being told repeatedly to say the 'correct things'.

Sure, perhaps Avery could also convince him to help with murder and whatnot. But that's not on camera. The police and defense forced confessions are, and are pretty cut and dry there.

MADISON, Wis. — A federal court in Wisconsin has overturned the conviction of a man found guilty of helping his uncle kill Teresa Halbach in a case profiled in the Netflix documentary "Making a Murderer."

The U.S. District Court in Milwaukee on Friday overturned Brendan Dassey's conviction and ordered him freed within 90 days unless the case is appealed.
Dassey confessed to helping his uncle Steven Avery carry out the rape and murder of Halbach, but attorneys argued that the confession was coerced.

Dassey was 16 when Halbach was killed in 2005 after she went to the Avery family auto salvage yard to photograph some vehicles. Avery was tried and convicted separately in the homicide.

Dassey's case burst into the public's consciousness with the popularity of the "Making a Murderer" documentary.

I think the state will appeal. I still maintain that this guy is guilty. Taken advantage of and bullied by his uncle into being an accessory to the murder of Theresa Halbach, but still guilty.

Finally some justice, the kid was manipulated by the police who were looking for a quick conviction on an easy target. This poor kid was collateral damage.
