I have named every infantry model in my IG Catachan army, MT army, and Inquisition force. Its over 200 models at least. Most of the names are my friends, characters from shows I watch, or inside jokes between friends. I also made ample use of the Tough Guy Name Generator. My favorites are Tim Curry (who killed Kharne in a challenge by dying and then using his spite to turn Kharne into a spawn, so I believe), my dog Copper (Games Day cyber mastiff), my wife Lil' Hotness (female commisar model), and Sammy Hagar who killed a demon prince with a krak grenade to the head on overwatch.

Krak grenade to the head on overwatch. That right there did it for me.

I wouldn't dare let a character take to the field without a name! How barbaric!

Remember what happens in Star Trek - the characters without names always die first. Therefore if you name your character, they will live longer.

I'm probably a huge dork here but I play grey knights so low model count. I named all my models. They have little dossier sheets and back stories. I keep track of their kills and awards. If they do supper good.... boom upgrade to deadknight or palidan... super bad.... boom dreadnought.

It's kinda a living document that changes. I also add in stuff about the battles and other enemies and whatnot. Ill see if I can attach it.

I have named a few. First let me say when I paint a model I consider it giving it 'life'. They don't get names right away, but they are 'playas'. Unpainted plastic are zombies.

My Ork Warboss is Klobber Noggin'. I have named a number of Blood Angels: Captain Corpusulous, Sargent Platelet. Private Hemo-Tobin.
There is some question in their ranks about what comes out of plasma guns...

I do but my problem is the names are usually some form of Hungarian or Romanian Google translation of something that sounds cool and I can never remember it. I should start writing them down.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!

I've done the same thing for everyone but the redshirts (that is, the Strikers, Purgators, Interceptors, Purifiers). So my Librarian, Dreadknight, Paladins, Grand Master, etc have names and small blurbs.
There is a Terminator who was the last model left on the board at the end of a game once. He got a name and a small blurb. There was also the Purifier wielding a Daemon Hammer who killed 2 Terminators and swept the other 3. His hammer was given a name and a big purity seal.

I'm on a podcast about (video) game design:
