Hey guys, as you are more experts than me on the matter, what makes a good MSU actually ? I was thinking to include my Skitarii Vanguards and Rangers in units of five in my 2000 points list but I don't know if it's a good idea to run Vanguards by five guys at this points cap. Thoughts ?

In my opinion, a good MSU unit:

1. Doesn't take more than the minimum number of models for the unit
2. Is able to survive a large weight of fire/attacks
OR
2. Is able to be spammed to the point where losing a few a turn is meaningless

Those are really the only two things I look for when I think of good MSU units or armies, and this doesn't really even cover all of them. GSC aren't survivable but there's a ton of them and they can spawn more of them. KDK aren't generally survivable either but they get Blood Tithe for their efforts. Death Guard are incredibly survivable but CSM are in general expensive so they can't be spammed too much. MSU is very dependent on the army you bring and the rules you use because both my points can be thrown out the window with other MSU style armies.

Well a min squad of Vanguards is 55 pts, with a 2W sergeant. All have T3, 4+ saves and FNP 6++. I can add a 5++ to the sergeant too for 5 points. Yay or nay ? That gives me 15 shots who wound twice any T value on 6's to wound if taken barebones.

Are they going to be shooting, trying to get into melee, or camping an objective? What is their goal?

Given their special weapons options they could be shooty anti-TEQ,shooty anti-vehicle, or melee assist squad with the Pater Radium relic and a nice CC weapon on the sergeant. They inflict -1 T to any enemy locked in combat with them, and the Pater Radium does 1d6 AP2 wounds at Init rank 1 if the enemy fails a T test. Of course that would raise their cost quite a bit but one such unit assisted by others stock Vanguards may be nice. I can give the sergeant a disruption +2S AP4 weapon too.

No ones mentioned Militarum Tempestus? They're best run in 5 man squads that can take 2 special weapons. Deep strike them and add in some taurox primes.

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

Meh, there is no point in doing MSU drop pods unless you aren't paying for them. Gladius is the more obvious choice, but if you min/max a Space Wolf Black Manes Detachment, I believe the most you can get is 23 or 25 drop pods with all naked 5mans (this included Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, etc).

Easily the best way to min/max Drop Pods and boardcontrol but you do lose ObSec compared to the Gladius which can easily reach 20 drop pods.

Brimstone horrors people, you get warp charges, bodies, 20 wounds for 30 points against gakky guns (looking at dark eldar mostly so meh), and possibilities to shoot D weapons with 30 point units.

320 points:
1x Exalted flamer
9x Brimstone Horrors

That right there is a cheap formation that lets you get a ton in for cheap. Sprinkle in 405 points for heralds and you have 725 for 27 warp charges with possibilites for D-weapons everywhere.
