Excellent observations and I totally agree with your conclusions. Getting back into the game from 4th edition (yikes!), and while assault was probably too strong then, its flipped so far the other way, for all the reasons you mentioned, that it's just crazy.

I'm working on a set of hybrid rules for 8th ed that bridge the gap between 8th and 5th edition. Some of the changes, like making pieces of tall area terrain outright block LoS again and restoring cover saves to how they worked in prior editions are pretty easy tweaks.

Others will take a bit more thought. I really think the changes to morale system and removal of fall back / sweeping advance has a more profound effect on the gameplay, even outside of assault, and needs to be revisited.
