Well I really love Outrider Detachments, Jump Troops or just speed melee so I'm overwhelmingly in favor of melee. He just seems to be in denial about his general shooting weakness or assault short comings personally or army. I wont blame him ether, necrons for years have had a fairly simple list build which mostly revolved around spamming warriors and destroyers. Whom also in older editions where tormented in long assaults with heavy weapons to skip reanimation. So hes kind of been funneled into that mentality and play.

He sounds like hes not one to experiment with 'Bad' units ether which is a bigger problem. I've done it a few times with a friend of mine that plays Orcs. I say I want you to play this unit you hate(He plays Green Tide). I show him the unit / points. Then I let him pick whatever he wants out of my dex for me to play of equal value(Usually something I complain about). It lets him feel like hes on the same playing field with experimentation. He seems really competitive, bitter, stubborn so he will be hard to work with but you can get them to bite if the bait is right. Give a little get a little. Maybe a small unit of Flayed Ones or Wraiths depending on how stingy he is on point sacrifice.
