Ive found as my kids get older they're begging to develop an interest in "daddy's toys". I've had to accept the inevitable breakages that come from handing over literally anything to a six year old but at the same time sharing my enthusiasm for tabletop gaming with them has been much more rewarding than hoarding my precious collection away in the boxes in the garage.

This was the boys first game of GorkaMorka maybe 2 years ago. The plan is simple, let him pick his mob and set up the table, I keep the rules real fast and loose and super simple. I've been building things slowly, introducing rules and scenarios as we go. And not just GorkaMorka, We've done some basic role play type stories and he's even assembled his own little undead force (including a T-Rex skeleton!) to battle my goblins. It's more important that he has a good time than getting the rules right, you know. But it's fun to share my hobby and I hope it becomes something we both can enjoy together.
Honestly I've only maybe been out for a grown-up game with my mates maybe twice in the last 2 years. But that's family life and I'm enjoying the crazy games with the boy just as much.

Most of my painting time these days happens in work on my lunch breaks!
But hey, I know soon enough the kids will be grown and will have their own lives going on. I'll get my workbench back and all but I'll miss the good old days of kiddi-hammer.

For Brigid's third Christmas, my wife and I picked her up her first dungeon crawl - the old Weebles Haunted House. (My wife tries to hog all the credit for that one. )

The Auld Grump - it is possible that we have plans for further Weeble adventures....

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Cloud City, Bespin

I have three sprogs 6, 4 and 3.

My eldest is interested in gaming the middle one isn’t bothered which is good because he can entertain himself, but my daughter and youngest wants to have all, so I gave her 3 unpainted minis ( monopose marine, lead corvus and a white metal powerfist sgt with helmet on belt)

All had bases and she happily played with them, she dropped the pf sgt and the base came off (I had cut the tab off long ago)
She was really upset because she thought she broke the big hand man.

I have have time for work, family and hobby, albeit the latter is generally late night Friday and when ever on the weekends but always after they go to bed

Have two boys , one who’s three and one who’s six. My six year old has recently started building marines and wants to build some of daddy’s bolt action. Hell no that’s not going to happen lol, as for my three year old well he’s akin to a walking nuclear bomb some days when the mood takes him so we only get to build the lads bits when the others in bed.

As for time to myself it’s one of those things you just have to balance, il try to do something each night whether it’s building, painting or working on terrain. Sometimes I won’t be able to do anything for a few days as real life can get in the way. But a bit now and here and it soon adds up. Just a shame my buy/build rate go in the wrong direction.

Dad to an almost 18month old.
It has definately been a learning curve. Those first few months are rough with the broken sleep and hobby gets put out of your mind.
Like others have said, if you want to hobby, you have to make the time. Sometimes that means organising a day off between 3 jobs and getting the wifes okay and organising for the little one to spend the day with the grandfolks so wife can have a break too so you can go to a club day.
Sometimes its waiting till everyone is asleep (boy goes to bed at 6 and wife hits the hay anywhere between 7 and 9 depending how exhausting sonny was that day) and getting some hobby done then before going to bed yourself.
In those times, getting the most out of you hobby time is best; you might have 2 hours or you might have ten minutes. I dont waste time with the 10minute ones as it takes abaput that long to set up (so the xbox gets pulled out instead) 30min+ and thats a model base coated.

Being open with the mrs is the must. We all have our ways of relaxing and recharging, if you need that time just talk it out- make sure she gets her own time too. 2 burnt out parents aint good.

Am looking forward to the day where me and the boy can sit down and hobby together. Until then, more important things like raising and teaching etc.
