I mainly proxy out of want, rather than out of necessity. Thus, I try to be as simple as possible:

Heavy armored Starfleet Marines? Scions. Chainguns are Volleyguns. Anyone have something different? Standard issue Hot-Shot Lasgun.

All the other Starfleet Marines are standard Guardsmen with their standard issue Lasgun (or Veteran with Lasgun, EXLUSIVELY. All Vets or all Guardsmen)

I've got more than enough Guardsmen and Scions if someone is going to have a problem.

All of my armies are always WYSIWYG weapon/gear wise. Even when that isn't the best option for the fight I find myself in atm. Oh well, I'll just do my best with what I've modeled.
Or, in some cases, NOT modeled....
For ex;

Years ago when I'd play in tournies my army of choice was Dark Angles. Not for any mechanical reason, but because it was the most compact/easy to transport and it was 100% painted & looked good. So my traveling army was DA, 3rd Co.
Anyways, somewhere along the line, damage occurred & my jump sgt lost his CCW arm. It sheared off right at the elbow. Of course I discovered this in the hotel room, a few hundred miles from home, the night before a tourney. And the missing piece was nowhere to be found. So I painted the stump black & wrote myself a note to replace the arm when I got home.
The next day comes & my jump sgt fights wielding only his plasma pistol.
Every single opponent was surprised when I didn't take the extra attack & melee. One even reminded me "What about the chainsword?" My reply was "What chainsword?" & pointed out once more that my army was WYS, that the black carapace had sealed the wound & that the apothecaries had been alerted to order a bionic arm ASAP.

Well, ASAP turned into years. Because I have several armies & rotate playing them. Thus once home I forgot to replace the arm as I wasn't thinking of my DA. So I'd go to the next event, open the case & go "*&%." And the poor sgt would fight one-armed yet again.
Eventually plastic Necrons came out & one evening I used a spare arm, some super thin brass rod, & a power sword and crafted the long promised bionic arm. Wich I then left sit in the paper clip holder of my work tables lamp for another two years....
It wasn't until about 2008/9 that the apothecaries finally fitted the sgt with his replacement arm.

All my armies are WYSIWYG too. I can't be bothered worrying about whether my army is equipped "optimally" or not. I'd prefer it if my opponent did the same, but not to the extent that I'll say anything if it's not.

I know a guy who had his own (bright green!) chapter of Space Marines. He had things like his Devastator Squad being made up of (and painted as) Techmarines; no in-game difference, but he liked the idea. He also had Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Blood Angels models in the army. Not even whole squads, just the odd model here and there that he liked. That was explained as them bearing gifts from these other chapters that they'd fought alongside.

Mostly he used them as Codex Space Marines, but on occasion he'd use the Blood Angels or Dark Angels army list if he fancied running an army with a lot of Assault marines or bikers and speeders, that sort of thing.

WOW! Good question and I do like everyone's comments on their own gaming experiences. The one that come to mind for me is way back when there was a thing called "Gamesday - Baltimore, MD." I had just completed painting AND flocking my Deathguard army (I painted them with Dark Angel Green/Purple, going for my own color scheme!). So I decided to play in these off-shoot games that were setup for "friendly" battles at gamesday and as I pulled out my army a GW rep said that I was not allowed to play as only "GW" miniatures could be used. I didn't get angry at this but simply asked him if "citadel" miniatures were allowed and he said "Of course they are, they are Early GW miniatures!!!!!" so I thanked him and continued setting up my army while telling him he should really know his miniatures as these were ALL RT citadel miniatures! The funny part was after his initial refusal he was then pretty much in awe at all the crazy miniatures Chaos has from the RT Era, especially the ole Bio Dreadnought and blood slaughterer!!!!

"I'm thinking of using the Horus Heresy Dorn model for my 40k Guiliman."
"But... but he has Storm's Teeth."
"Yeah but he doesn't really use that flaming sword it's more-"
"WHERE DID HE GET STORM'S TEETH??"

I do this all the time, but it's generally because I'm trying too hard to be funny. I myself love to kitbash everything. My Tallarn regiment is made up of genestealer and scion parts.

By all means run Dorn as Guiliman, Imperial Fists as Ultramarines, Dark Angels as Black Templars. Just be sure you set the expectation with your opponent.

Vigo. Spain.

I would also use Horus Heresy Dorn for 40k guilliman. Hes such a superior model. And at the end of the day they are both big marines with short air, fancy swords, on top of a rock.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I like how the reaction is that he has Storm's Teeth and not that Power Fist hand. Though I just had an idea: paint one silver to represent his lost hand and call it the Hand of Dominion?
