The 'Codex Imperialis' book from second edition.
I'd avoid the HH series like the plague - it only really makes any sense if you already know 40k, and the overhwleming majority of the books are godawful.

Certainly not. I would strongly advise against this overrated non 40k fan fiction for a beginner. The Big Black Book is certainly the best option and then I guess we have good ones here.
Can you go into a little more detail. I'd hardly consider an official novel by someone who is considered to be one of BLs best a fan fiction. As for the rule book, it gives a quick over view but hardly has the details needed to flesh out a faction.
useally when someone says a novel is "fan fiction" what they mean is "THIS CONDTRICITS MY HEAD CANON SO IT MIGHT AS WELL BE FAN FICTION" the irony of that apparently escapes them
Emperor forbid the author of a novel is a fan of the fiction they add to!
I want to second the vote for the arbites/judge lady... I was reading a novel called Enforcer (i think) but sadly the book disappeared somewhere.

OR
It means that they are equating the quality of the writing to that of the kind of stories that hyper agressive teens write. There is more than a fair share of GW novels that cross way over into the edgelord tryhard section, and a few that blast past that barrier like a Demolisher shell.

Not quite a novel, but still worth a mention:
Dark Heresy Roleplay from itmeJP on YouTube. They had a rather light-hearted approach to the whole thing and there is a good amount of exposition for the setting as a whole.
Not the worst thing for a first-timer.

We are at the 42nd millenium, aren't we? The most core book to introduce you to the new setting is probably Dark Imperium.
If you are not into the overall lore and just want something to enjoy, then Gaunt Ghost would be your thing. The problem is that it's very old and no longer consistent with a lot of the things GW has changed up to this point.

Exactly the kind of answers I was expecting: He IS tHe MoSt bEsT of aLL he Can'T be wROng" when psyker can be in a relationship with a blank, even touch her or civilian have jetbike while 40k made it pretty clear those exact two things are impossible but hey, apparently I do write fan fictions and I have "headcanons" because I read the rulebooks and the codex
