I have almost 3k of Stormcast, my man. I just think this thing in the animation was the worst stormcast I've ever seen, on par with the initial deviantart-tier art from AoS 1.0. It's clear which metal boy got more budget to animate
Ident we’ve seen for what, an hour now, is crap because it’s not as instantly recognisable as one we’ve had with us throughout our entire lives.

Again, if you look back to my initial argument- 20th century fanfare would stand out from other short-clip compositions even if you never heard it in your life. This doesn't stand out at all. It has no character as a musical piece, it's elevaor music

But hey, at least we know why they needed to raise prices of Start Collecting boxes, this amazing piece won't pay for itself after all

Between this an last years logo, I'm beginning to wonder how much time and money they have to waste on a new 'brand identity' when they've already got one.
Hopefully we'll see some time and money go into miniatures at some point...

Funnily enough, I thought this was going to be revival of their old 80’s/90’s record label, since records seem to be coming back in vogue.

I’m sure the ident is important to their marketing team, but it just struck as an “oh, sorta nice -now move along” kind of thing. Makes me wish their “new release” articles went into the depth this marketing article did. I suppose it shows who’s running the company theses days, and a hint is it isn’t the game/model designers.

It never ends well

I doubt it, as some of the music they play at WHW won't be licenced to them, like the LotRs soundtrack.

Plus you can already buy a CD of the music that they pipe into the gaming hall from the store.

Right, everybody with a criticism of something related to AoS must still be mad over WHFB. Think you took a wrong turn on the way to TGA.

The Stormcast does look pretty terrible. The proportions don't look like they're wearing heavy armour and the helmet is too shiny compared to the rest of the armour. Presumably they wanted the video out now and it was a WIP. Marine looks alright but you'd hope they'd not manage to mess that up.

This jives with the rumours of a mini blue screen/sound stage and prop workshop as part of the facility expansion at GW HQ.

This is a big gamble, if it pays off (i.e. produces good content) then they're set.

I'm worried it will be a bit naff though.

Wow, thats some bland waste of effort. Probably the most boring music related to the IP i've ever heard.

I guess one can always keep fingers crossed that this was just one time fluke and the rest of the production is great.

But I doubt it

A more true quote than even you realize because if you took more than a cursory glance at the animation then you would have realized that it's a female Liberator.

So there was only ever one metal boy to begin with...

As far as quality though, it's actually pretty accurate to models like Astreia Solbright or Angharad.

Guys regardless of whether you think the Ident is of a high quality or not I think we all have to admit this is pretty exciting stuff? The fact that they need one at all is huge. This is Disney, Marvel, DC, MGM, HBO level stuff.

In my opinion it signals a shift in the brand towards a much more mainstream focus. TV Shows. Animations. Films. Comics. I'd take all of that over nothing.

We're getting an Eisenhorn TV show. Actual actors will be on screen portraying the 40k universe. Not some fan youtube video. Content supported by and endorsed by GW. I'm guessing this Ident will be at the end or start of the show.

Personally I hope the anthology is a series of animations in the style of "Love, Sex and Robots". 40k and AOS are perfect for that sort of rapid-fire, engaging story telling.

I mean, they think they need one, it's not quite the same as needing one for a fact. I'd say designing the nokia tune before the nokia phone it can be played on is putting the cart before the horse and smacks of PR dept finding reasons to justify their existence

Hmm. Personally, I've not had great experiences so far with IP's I like being given "a much more mainstream focus", especially as the people brought into said IPs by those versions begin to filter down into the more niche aspects of the fandom like tabletop gaming with a very different version of the IP in their head than the people already there have, which typically either leads to the existing fanbase being displaced if the influx is large enough, or the new people becoming angry and bitter and launching a culture war if there aren't enough of them to fully take over.

Good(and not just in terms of production values) TV shows, animations, films, and comics would be exciting, but these days I try very hard not to be excited at the mere prospect of them because there's every chance they won't be what I consider to be "good", and may even actively harm my experience of the IP as it presently exists.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

Haven't watched that vid before - notice that it says at the end to expect the Angel of Death trailer Jan 2020. I guess we know at least one thing to be revealed at the LVO?

I think there's little risk there's a negative impact of GW bringing more people into the IP. It's happened time and time again and the IP still remains strong.

Vis a vis how "good" the media is/are? Obviously that's subjective. Again though, I'd rather take something over nothing.

It's not more people that's a problem, it's more people brought in via a more "mainstream" focus as you put it.

If there's too big an influx of Popularity Locusts into a fandom in a short space of time, they can cause a lot of problems and some of them stick around long after the Locusts themselves have largely moved on; companies follow the money and alter their IP's to better suit the tastes of the new casual audience they've attracted, and when they move off again to the next Big Thing the fandom shrinks back to something like the size it was before, however it's now radically polarised between the small percentage of Locusts who became hardcore fans(but only of the newer version of the IP that caters to their tastes) and the remaining elements of the original fandom who weren't driven away. That's neither a fun environment to exist in as a fan, nor a good foundation for the company to make money since they're trying to please two or more groups who all want a version of the IP that the other group/s will hate.

I'd much rather have less material that keeps the niche focus & style that actually made me a fan of Warhammer in the first place than an endless stream of stuff that misses the point and creates a big audience of casual consumers who do the same. Not everything has to be for everybody.

The stills look fantastic. And one assumes the animation will too.

But, and here’s some exceedingly rare Grotsnik cynicism.....(treasure it)

Will the voice and motion match?

Given 40k is *everything* dialled to 11, and a bit? I want this to deliberately and knowingly tread that line, and cross hither thither between abject horror and ridiculous camp.

Because just as in the brain, the difference between pleasure and pain is apparently a membrane! So could the difference between this being totally ace, and utterly rubbish.

Time will tell. My only comfort is that GW have always been famously, if not notoriously, very, very careful about their IP. And rightly so.

GW is careful about their IP in ensuring that whoever gets the contract tends to obey GW when it comes to staying on message with regard to the IP and not going their own way.

However GW is FAR more free with their IP in terms of the companies they are wiling to sign. There are a lot of small indie computer companies who got the GW IP but who don't really have top grade skills or the team/funding to actually complete their ideal game. For every Total War or Dawn of War there's a good few other much smaller firms who never make it or never make "great" games.

GW is the same in other markets - AoS Champions has died a rather pathetic death after the host company decided to spend 6 months in silent mode; clearly wound down all physical card production and then cancelled it outright trying to save face by going fully digital (This is after multiple events and a lot of noise about being a physical product line).

Plus there's the Ultramarines film. So there IS still potential for a mess up. That said my impression is that GW is taking this much more seriously now. I think they are seeing it as a very powerful exposure and marketing tool - far more so possibly than games. So there's likely more pressure on achieving a much higher quality result.
