Take a look at the "Tempestor" model. You can replace his ranged weapon with the Rod of command or whatever, but it still says he has a power sword on him. I see him holding a dagger under his cloak, find me the "power sword" on that model. WYS is not always WYG.

The game is way too expensive to not allow people to proxy models and define weapons loadouts in different ways. Its easy to just mark bases with different paint colours to indicate weapons.
The intention behind WYSIWYG is nice that it helps in competition, but the practice of it is really just to needlessly buy more GW product.

I prefer WYSIWYG actually for the spectacle aspect.
It looks way cooler if the Techmarine beating my daemonettes to death actually has this huge servo-harness on, rather than just the devastator backpack with the tiny robot arm for the missile launcher.
THAT SAID, I already made my position clear: I don't really worry about what my opponents do but I prefer it for myself.

With Imperial Guard it is utterly meaningless if going by the Regimental Rules. You can't tell someone to WYSIWYG with their Cadians when they want to play Mordian or Valhallans... as the models are now OOP.

I hold myself to a much higher WYSIWYG standard than I hold others. Some armies like Eldar, DE and Tau I can’t really tell one weapon from another so I have to trust those opponents anyway.

Basically anything outside of Imperium has a good chance of not being recognised by your opponent. There is so much diversity that outside of a few select examples like the Riptide, people don't really know what anything is (not just weapons, but models too).

While I agree that outside the most popular armies many players can’t recognise specific models and weapons on sight, WYSIWYG at least makes it possible if you do know what to look for.
Also, when model design is done right, the models shouldn’t only look good. They should also signal what they do to a certain extent. Even if I’m unfamiliar with a model or a faction, I should ideally be able to see if something is a threat in melee or at range based on the model, and anti tank weapons should be distinguishable from anti infantry weapons and so on.

This is pretty much my stance on the topic, visually I like everything to look correct. A piece of wargear you probably wouldn't be able to see doesn't bother me, but a lascannon should be a lascannon, and not a heavy bolter. That being said if my opponent plays it that way I wouldn't say anything or refuse a game, but personally I wouldn't do it myself.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples |

WYSWIG is fine, I much prefer CONSISTENCY over it.
Every X gun which stands out? Oh thats plasma.
Y gun which is different to X / The basic guns in the squad? Melta.
And the understanding I may need to ask for clarity during the game.

There are many models that have weapons which do not appear on the model, nor are they required to. I've already mentioned Tempestors, but I personally never put grenade packs on my guard, or launchers on my Intercessor Bolt Rifles. I can't physically put a power sword on a Tempestor, and I'll be honest, Miseracorias are a giant pain in the ass for some of the Custodes models. But I'll still include them on the list.

Why not? Your clippers/glue/hobby knife only work when assembling models according to the instructions?
Or you're just out of spare swords?

It's very important to me.
If I have a model on the table, it will have the weapons modelled and attached to it, that I am saying I've paid points for and it's equipped with. If I don't own a Knight that has a pair of Avenger Gatling cannons, I don't get to field one.
That said, most opponents that I've played against locally ask if I'm ok with say: 'This unit of marines is modelled with chainsaws, but I've given them Thunder Hammers - I don't own enough Thunder Hammer models'. And I'd never say no. I'd love it if they went the extra mile with wysiwyg, but there are genuine reasons why people won't or can't.
It shouldn't ever get in the way of people being able to participate and enjoy their hobby. At a tournament on the other hand, you agree to a specific set of rules and standards and are obliged to conform to them.

Can't you just cut the sword hand off and stick it to the arm poking out of the Tempestor's sleeve?
I ask because I basically did the same thing with a Power Fist.

I don't have any trouble with WYSIWYG at all. In the last ten years I have played only against two strangers. One was an Eldar player who did a demo game of 8th with me. We pretty much agreed in advance what will be in our lists.
2nd time was a special Imperial Knight event in which all four players had only access to a single IK. So no issues either.
In all other cases I have provided my opponent with one of my other armies and my collection adheres strictly to WYSIWYG.
