I want to say the dark dawning of the internet was around. Message boards. Part of my brain is saying rec/games/ misc. It’s been a while, I forget the rest. Old code, text and ASCII art.

Not that old myself but I remember the sheer apoplectic rage and khorne-shaming table-flipping anger when tau were introduced and 'destroyed the setting and the game'.

I think it's indisputable that GW has always intruduced new stuff and that those changes have always been met by some amount of backlash from the community.
I would just argue that the introduction of primaris was done in a very hamfisted and cheap way. Probably driven entirely by some coorporate shmuck who thought that just updating the marine model range wasn't flashy enough.
They could have just said that cawl has been working on a new armor design to equip the struggling marine chapters in the wake of Guillimans return. That would have been a more gentle change instead of making Cawl the super genius who invented marines+.
The models are nice though for the most part. The standard intercessor kit is really good and other kits like the bladeguard veterans are just absolutely stellar. The phobos stuff is tacticool garbage.
But GW going towards a more realistic scale for Space Marine models has been generally received quite positively I think, even though some people don't like some of the new design language.
Edit: GW not letting primaris embark on stuff like land raiders because they need to sell their new antingrav tanks is just full on moronic btw.
Also, introducing anti grav tech on a big scale like with repulsors is peak idiocy, considering it has always been very rare crusade tech or earlier...now every average Joe in the imperium seems to have it.

^Absolutely true. Necrons, Tau, MkVII Marines, all that jazz.
That said, Primaris is the first introduction which threatened to fully replace a faction. Tau, for all the rage, had zero effect on other armies or previous collections. Primaris had a lot of overtones of "out with the old, in with the new". and some people are still pushing for dropping support for the old line.

I find the models and artwork uninspiring.
I think they damage the Space Marine lore and themes of the setting.
The good things is that they are set firmly in M42, so any campaign set before then doesn't need to concern themselves with Primaris!
Not true. They took the time in at least one of the books to have Guilliman rant about the Astra Chronlogius (or whatever bollocks latin-esque abomination) and how the calendar is probably hundreds of years off, before even accounting for lost centuries and timey-whimey warp shenanigans (which has included entire chapters being declared heretics because a single individual ended up in a time loop before they became heretics so they they became heretics).
