My friends just bought the wood elf dragon with the two women on it. He's put the women on an eagle but is left with the dragon. The base supplied is a large square base? Like the ones of the blood wrack medusa, or any ogre.. which he states is the proper base "less models can get into base contact.

Why would that be the case when every other dragon and most monsters come on a chariot base at least?

Models are supposed to be on the bases they are supplied with, the wood elf dragon is provided with a 50mm square, and as such, should be mounted on a 50mm square.

But is it supplied with that base because it's an old model? It hardly seems fair every other dragon comes on a larger base..

It's supplied with that because that's what all dragons used to be supplied with (they all stood on their hind legs in an uprightish position) and since the kit hasn't been replaced, they supply it with the same base they always have.

The 50x50 base is old way of doing things. He should be on a chariot base.

You can guarantee that if a new WE Dragon is released, it will use the Chariot base or larger. However until that day comes, it should be mounted on the 50mm base because that's what it comes with. If you feel this is unfair, consider that the rider has a 3+ save at best compared with the much greater saves available to any other Dragon rider.

Similar cases of small-base syndrome:
- The Shaggoth is on a 50mm base, hilariously making it smaller than regular Dragon Ogres
- The old Treeman remains valid on his old 50mm base
- Greater Daemons use 50mm bases, making them smaller than Plague Drones
- A Chaos Lord riding a Juggernaut has a smaller base than his Skullcrushers

Personally, I would mount it on a "current" base, as inconsistencies bother me. But ruleswise, he is correct in putting it on the 50x50 base.

I've set my old metal Warp Lightning Cannons and Doomwheels on Chariot bases, but then the newer models have that, so it's an easy jump in logic.
