I've seen a few threads pop up asking for the best army in the game, but I'm genuinely curious to see what the community thinks is the best army for 500-1000 point games, and what makes them better than the others. Thoughts?

The game at that level is very rock paper scissors, so there is no best race.

E.g. A brings a WK.
B brings venom spam, kills WK
C brings anni barges, kills venoms. Does to wk.

Obviously not the most thought out example, it you get what I mean.

Pretty much what the guy above me said. At those kinds of points levels you win by bringing something the other player can't counter (I suppose you could say that about all point levels, but it's magnified in games this small since the toolbox is so much smaller).

I don't know enough about this game to go through each army and see what kinds of counters/problems they can present, but it's basically asking "what army can bring a question that's answerable by the least other armies while still being able to bring the most answers."

Fliers would be nice, Necrons maybe. A big ugly brick of a MC would be cool. Tau could probably rock things with a Farsight list....

Now I think about it, Tau farsight might just be your answer.

Above guys are correct. Think about a regular 1500 -2000 point game, what units do you think "gotta kill that quick" or "thats gonna hurt" about? Now put 2 or 3 of those in 1000 points.

I've had pretty good luck with Guard, because you can afford to bring both a couple of very nasty tanks and a horde of infantry at 1000. A list that's good at destroying one of those will probably have difficulty dealing with the other.

People are probably sick of me saying it by now, but for small points games?

You just can't beat Sisters. Everything we have that we can field at higher points ratings, we can fit into a 1000 point list with sufficient nastiness to take on all comers. The only things we struggle with at fliers. Everything else, the smaller the game gets, the more it plays to our strengths - cheap, powerful offence with a solid defence.

Even at the 500 point mark, you're looking at two troops, an HQ and a fast attack with enough Power Armoured, BS4 Ignores Cover melta and Power Armoured flamers to take on anything from an Ork Mob to That One Guy who puts a Land Raider in a 500 point list.

time was it was orks, basically never beaten at 500 points. though with the new mek guns, I think that an ork atrillery army of 10 kustome mega kannons and 5 normal kannons would be pretty effective. have to have minimal grot squads for troops though.

also, don't forget we orks can put 150 odd grots on the field at 500 points.

12,300 points of Orks

Forces that rely on mutual support and force multipliers are going to have a tough time at lower points games. Tyranids are a good example of this, it's hard to fit enough into a low-points game to have a reasonably balanced army. I've seen space marines have the same problem too a fair few times. My Tau certainly get better as the points-limit increases.

In my experience Orks and Guard do very well at low-point games; I'd give the edge to the Orks between the two but not by much.

Elysian Drop Troops. Keep all your guys in vendettas and valks, have fliers on the field T1, good luck. They're insane at the best of times, but in small points games.

Also, Sisters and Eldar. But yeah.

I don't know about best, but Nids usually do very well at the 500 to 1000 level, because of MCs.
