i am going to start an army of thror but dont know quite what to take, here's my what im thinking:

warband 1
thorin with oakenshield
6 grimhammers

warband 2
dwalin
6 grimhammers

warband 3
balin
12 warriors of erebor with 6 shields and 6 spears

i would use the young thorin, young balin and young dwalin models to keep it true to the book but i will probably at some point change the arms of dwalin to two-handed hammer to keep it true to the rules (also i think the young modle with two axes kind of sucks).

anyway what do you guys think?

Looks like it would be fun to play. You're relying on Thorin and Dwalin to do a lot of the heavy lifting, which is fine as they're both badass. The Warriors make a nice Battle Line in the centre, with the Grimhammers shielding heroes on each flank. I'd keep Balin where he can use his abilities, but try to keep him out of combat; he'll die fast if outnumbered or if he comes up against a powerful character.

Okay thanks, I currently have a mirkwood army but I dont like it much anymore. Do you think the dwarves would be better than:

warband 1
Tauriel
12 rangers

warband 2
thranduil with bow and armour
10 palace guard with 6 spears and 6 shields

because I might sell my elves

I don't know if Tauriel is any good, but assuming the Wood Elves are largely the same as the old LOTR ones stat-wise, the elf list looks good too.

You've got a lot of good shooting in the Rangers (do Wood Elves ignore the 33% bow limit?) and the Palace Guard look solid. The elves will be less durable but more mobile, and with the power to whittle the enemy down before they hit you.

Funny enough, the two will combine well at higher points. Putting the Rangers in with the Dwarves when you hit 800 points or so would give them some mobile shooting and a faster element, and the Dwarves make a solid defence for Elf archers. So if you can help it, I wouldn't sell either, the two armies slot together very nicely for a 1000 point list.

If you have to pick one, though, I'd go with the Dwarves, purely based on the models.

Yes, elves ignore the bow limit, and rangers have better stats than the old wood elves. I think tauriel is also quite good because she gets an extra attack for everyone she is in combat with. I dont know why I dont like them but theyre just not fun anymore, I guess its because I quite like strong hard hitting units. I think I will sell the elves soon. Thanks for all your help mate
