Got some Command Squad sprues on the way. What is the best way to kit them out? I wanted them to be mostly shooty with basically just the attached IC kitted for melee. Any thoughts? Running them as IH by the way, so do I really need the Apothecary?

If your doing Iron hands, put em on a bike and give em grav.
5 grav guns on a toughness 5 relentless platform is pretty beast.
If your drop podding them, you will probably want plasma with iron hands, although melta or flamers arent a horrid option (just alot better with salamanders chapter tactics).

\yeah, I just have the Command Squad box to work with so... no bikes. I kind of wanted to avoid using bikes and go a bit different approach with my army.
What I was thinking was give the Squad a Standard Bearer, an Apothecary, and then kit the other three out with storm bolters but... no storm bolters in the kit... Actually, the kit doesn't even come with any guns they Squad can actually use, aside from plasma pistols. So... gonna have to go on ebay and get some bits

What do you want this squad to do?
Do you want them to beat up stuff in melee? Do you want them to blow up important targets, or just run around protecting your HQ?
What role you want them to perform will heavily influence what kit you should give them.

Barring Sentienals of Terra, I see no reason to pay for storm bolters on a command squad. They are just not that much of an improvement over the bolter. You are either going to need to make them a generalist reserve squad (expensive), or task them to a duty to cover for your list. Personally, I have good luck with them as a generalist reserve in a Rhino.

I've been playing around w/ 4 flamers+ 4 meltabombs + Apoth in a pod using Sallies Tactics. Works pretty well.

Well I guess I need them to be a swiss army knife really. The only options I have for CC at the moment are the HG, which the CS is meant top replace in smaller games, and 10 AM, so I'm guessing that given the options available, both in the kit and in the wargear list I'll probably kit them pretty bare.
This is why. With only Veterans being able to take from Ranged and Melee this leaves the Apothecary with only a BP and CS. So if he is included that means he won't be contributing to shooting very much. Same with the Company Champion. The Standard Bearer however remains a Veteran and thus can take from the list. Since the box comes with 6 legs here is what I plan on doing.
I'll build the squad with all 3 Character upgrades, and this will leave me with 3 guys who can take options. Two of them can take Combi-Weapons and the other one can remain as a BP&CCW guy. This way I can switch out the Standard Bearer, who will also rock a Combi, and the Champion as required. For times when I want more dakka, I can use the Standard Bearer, and when I want them to be slightly more choppy, I'll throw in the Champion.
Here is another though too, I can use the Standard Bearer as a Chapter Banner bearer in my HG squad, and just deck the CS out full dakka.

You realize you can give them Special weapons as well? (its in the FAQ)
I run mine with 3 plasma guns, CC, Standard and Apothcary. But I'm weird that way. They aren't cheap but they deal a lot of damage with the plasma guns when they pile out of their razorback. The apothecary works wonders on keeping them from frying themselves with gets hot rolls.

I'd drop the standard, it's mostly only for decoration purposes, and take an Apothecary for those points to add some extra safety on the inevitable gets hot rolls. Give the captain a combi-plasma. Aim at 2+ armour. Profit!

I think four specials and storm shields is expensive, but hilarious.
Throw a tank commander in front and let the good times roll
Throw the re-roll ones item from clan raukan on there combined with their meltas/plasma. Muahahaha

Yes, just don't splurge too much on the Captain's gear as he won't likely be in combat.
Combi weapon, single claw and artificer armor.

Really we need to know how many points you are looking to spend on the unit. Honestly if you are looking to do CC honor guard are so much better.

Yes you do, but he also help your army in certain ways that are beneficial:
1. He unlocks the HG, which since CC is what you're looking for they are much cheaper than TDA units for similar output.
2. he has a S10, AP1, Ordnance, Barrage, Large Blast shooting that can help against tough, concentrated targets like MEQ/ TEQs.
3. With a bike he gives you bike troops, which are fast mobile OS units with good dakka.
3. For only a handful of points more than a captain he adds +1W & As.
Since you already have HG you might know this already, but CSs aren't really good for combat without being expensive enough to really consider HG, who are much better at the task for cheaper per man. CSs are better for shooting since each model, before character upgrades, can take special weapons, which means potentially 4-5 Graviton guns, Plasma guns, Melta guns or Flamers. Thats quite good for the cost.

I run something like this, but i run 4 flamers, with storm sheilds and an apoth. IF i have the points left over i also put grav pistols on them. They are in the razorback to go around and clear off objectives.
