What is the best table to roll on with Longstrike as your warlord?

Your basic Arachnid warrior isn't too smart, but you can blow off a limb, and it's still 86 percent combat effective. Here's a tip: Aim for the nerve stem, and put it down for good.

You can't make DJ Longstrike your Warlord unless you're playing Unbound since non-characters can only be the Warlord if you have no characters in your army.

Top of page 124, doesn't mention anything about unbound.

Unbound is the only way a Tau army can be built with no characters since it's the only way to field Longstrike without having an HQ choice.

From the first paragraph under "The Warlord", page 570 of the Interactive edition.

"Unless specified otherwise, this must be a character model. If you do not have any character models in your army, then select any other model in your army to be the Warlord."

But Longstrike is a character

He is not a HQ choice, however, and thus he can not be your warlord in a "bound" list.

Not according to the Tau codex or the current Tau FAQ, he's not.

I must've missed that. Could you point me to the page that says a HQ must be your warlord, please

Edit: this is what I'm refering to

THE WARLORD
‘No army is big enough to conquer the galaxy. But faith alone can overturn the
universe.’
When choosing your army, you must nominate one model to be your Warlord.
Unless specified otherwise, this must be a character model. If you do not have
any character models in your army, then select any other model in your army to be the
Warlord. The model you choose as your Warlord also determines your Primary
Detachment.

Does not have to be an HQ anymore, but LongStrike is not a Character so does not matter. There is no Tau HQ that is not a Character, and you have to take an HQ to be Battleforged. So that leaves just Unbound as a away to make a non-Character Tau a Warlord

Damn it! My bad folks. I could've sworn he was a character. I should actually do work at work and not theory craft random stuff at work

Nothing says the warlord has to be an HQ, simply bringing an HQ doesnt mean he has to be your warlord. Theres also no leadership restriction anymore (before it was highest leadership, pick if theres a tie) so you CAN have a non-HQ character be your warlord.

However its generally a bad idea imo. All the characters i know of are pretty weak compared to the HQ choices, only difference would be a special weapon (no precision shots anymore so big deal).

I am surprised though that Longstrike wasnt a character. Not like he'd be the only character vehicle model. BA have a walker thats a character (least i think it was BA)

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

The big place the Tau can take advantage is with a Broadside Shas'vre, since he can take the Advanced Targeting System that lets him Precision Shot on a 5+. He's ineligible for 2 of the Tau Warlord traits, and the other four are all fairly useful to a jerk with a twin-linked Heavy Rail Rifle, leading two jerks with HYMPs, Target Locks, and lots of missile drones.
