We ran into a few situations today where a unit that had been assaulted was wiped out by some random damage (soul blaze) and completelly destroyed. Here is the question that we could not find an answer to:

If two units are locked into combat and the other is destroyed by some other means in other phases than the assault phase, can the other unit consolidate, or are they left in place?

In our example a unit of horrors assaulted an one man unit of sternguard, who had soul blaze on. Both sides wiffed the close combat and it resulted into a tie. At the end of the turn the sternguard model suffered a wound from soul blaze and died. We could not find a rule that covers this situation, so we left the horrors as they were and they did not consolidate. Was this right?

"At the end of a combat, if a unit’s opponents are all either destroyed or Falling Back, or the end of combat Pile In was insufficient so that it is no longer locked in combat, that unit may Consolidate."

Looks like your opponents were all destroyed, so your unit consolidates. There is no condition that the opponents unit must have been destroyed by the close combat.

Consolidation only happens at the end of the combat during the assault phase. You run into this a lot with nova powers also as a GK player. Cleansing flame a unit your squad is in melee with and then shoot and assault a new unit is pretty funny.

But soul blaze happens at the end of the turn so you don't have permission to consolidate, right?

Good point, I missed the "end of the turn" rather than end of combat in the OP.

So yes, since all units were still in combat at the end of combat, there is no consolidation. Fun!
