Subject: Tyranids combined with Heldrake, Daemon Prince and Plague Marines

Hey guys I have been thinking it over and I have come to the conclusion that the Heldrake, Daemon Prince and Plague Marines combined with a melee tyranid army can actually do quite well.
The heldrake provides some much needed support and the plague marines give the army an incredible way to hold objectives. The daemon Prince can be used to fly in with the flying tyrant to make sure it doesnt get shot down in one turn.
Any thoughts?

Well plague marines are elites unless you have a nurgle lord so you would need a troops choice too. The daemon prince can either be a flying summoner (with brand and spell familiar) or he can be a gliding Nurgle (for 2+ cover) Black Mace prince (who wont be killing anything till turn 4 f he flies on from reserves). What is the rest of your army like, what tactical role do you lack and need? from your description of benefits you want tough scoring units and units to clear out guys who are in cover (with 3+ or worse saves).

I have a very melee based Tyranid army with a full melee Hive Tyrant, genes, gaunts and Trygon. I had trouble holding objectives with things like gaunts and also had trouble with my Tyrant being gunned down really early on.
I am playing mostly against Full Ork armies and Full Space Marine armies.

Hide a venomthrope in a bastion or behind LOS blocking terrain and then jink when your enemy shoots at your tyrant that will give him a 2+ cover save.
Melee FMC got extra specially nerfed now that they cannot land and charge in the same turn.
If you fly on turn 2 from reserves then you are land turn 3 and then turn 4 you get to charge someone (assuming you are alive). A melee FMC in reserve is terrible in 7th. If you really want to field one then he will have to start on the board and probably not even swoop for most of the game. It's sad but true. If you are doing this then you could also take either Bel'kor or a nurgle black mace prince, either one will have 2+ cover saves too and neither one will be doing much swooping.
Consider some Carnifexes with dual TL devourers, these guys are pretty good and thier hammer of wrath makes them still awesome in melee vs vehicles (the TL devourers will cut down orks and do good damage to bikers).

FMC's can jink on the ground RAW, and so the fastest way to combat is by jumping. jump, run, jump again and you're 25-30" closer, and probably charging turn 2. the air is there for dakka.
venomthropes in a bastion is quite a nice idea, actually. boosts the range wondrously. the only other option would be a fortress of redemption, but now it has to be in your deployment zone, that's no good. before they could have moved into the next section every turn and gotten the bubble closer to your army.
you need more LOS blocking terrain if a flyrant is getting gunned down every time, use the manoeuvrability and don't just rush forward like so many people do. hide behind rocks, buildings, anywhere you can't get shot. jump out and charge, job's a good 'un.
I'd reccomend the gunbeasts with the plasma-pieplate for orks now, as big-guns are going to be a mainstay for the ork firepower. prepare to deal with T7 with 4+ cover and you'll probably be fine against orks.
