I don't normally go for these introduction threads, but considering my lack of experience in the hobby and community I figured I might as well. I'm probably going to be coming here frequently just to see what people are saying about things and less to talk myself.

I've developed a pretty strong interest in the hobby and will soon take the plunge. I've been interested in 40K for a while, but my finances have never lined up to ever actually do anything about it. The planets are starting to align, however, and I'm thinking it may be time. I've been doing some research here and there (I wouldn't really call it in-depth, so to speak , but I think its comprehensive enough) and I have a basic game plan spanning out some ways into the future. The main obstacle I'm facing right now is the sheer amount I'm going to have to put forward before I can start into the hobby. My friends are interested, but incredibly unlikely to contribute until there's a solid foundation to work off of. Its just easier for them to stick to their normal tabletop fare at this point. Plus, until it manages to materialize, its kinda unfair of me to ask them to put anything of their own forward. I'm also new to the whole painting thing. I'm cool with that, though. Painting like this is something I really want to learn and I have a fascination with the skill, so I'm willing to put in the effort to learn. Its an uphill battle (especially at the onset), but I've known that since my interest was first piqued so that's nothing new.

My initial focus will be on Necrons => Dark Vengeance => Tyranids
I doubt I'll actually play the game this year. I'm playing the long game with this one.

I appreciate any words of wisdom others may want to share.

Welcome to the forums!

Necrons are definitely a top tier army right now, so have fun with them. Check the General Discussion thread to find what people are recommending, there are a few topics in there regarding the 'Crons.

Also, do not dare to hope...it is forbidden in these lands...

I've been figuring that out. Which is cool, since the army of space egyptian terminators seemed like a cool concept. I'm glad that follows through.

One of my friends really likes the Tyranids (I think they're pretty nifty myself), so that's the reason for branching into that.

Dark Vengeance is for options. I'd rather have Salamanders than Dark Angels, but, comparatively speaking the set is a steal for what you get out of it and the Dark Angels units look pretty badass. I'm probably going to fudge the thing anyway, and paint the Chaos Marines in Tzeentchian colors. Tzeentch seems pretty rad.

If I manage to make it beyond what I've already listed, I'll spread out into Tau, but that's way too far down the road to even consider. Too many variables to consider in the here and now with my current plans.

Hey! Welcome to Dakka Dakka, and the hobby!!

I think you have a great idea! Start slow, figure out what you want out of it, you already know what armies you like so go for it. Slow means you'll probably be able to get everything painted up nice before you buy more, that's smart!

Again, welcome aboard!

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of the women.

Hello, and welcome to Dakka! Necrons are great army to work with: can be easy to paint to a good standard, a good range of models and the rules despite being written in 5th still hold up strong in the current edition.

Welcome to DakkaDakka

Aye Necrons are good to start with mostly just one colour of metal, eye colour being what energy you use for them and that's about it

Got a gallery of a few models in different armies

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

IceAngel wrote:I must say Knightley, I am very envious of your squiggle ability. I mean, if squiggles were a tactical squad, you'd be the sergeant. If squiggles were an HQ, you'd be the special character. If squiggles were a way of life, you'd be Doctor Phil...

eBay could be a place to get an army if you are really budget constrained. But I usually use ebay for small purchases because I like painting and assembling my models in my own way. But if you are cool with having them painted in different standards, it might be possible. Also, I find that after shipping and all, it comes up to the same thing as buying sometimes.

And welcome! If you are starting Necrons, check out the most badass looking Necron: Obyron! At least IMO.

I'm going for the full experience, so new, unassembled, unpainted models are key. I also want to support the company if I can afford it.

I've looked up Obyron and Nemesor. Theyre pretty awesome. I also like Szeras and Trazyn. Szeras because he looks cool and Trazyn for everything else. The Necrons have some really cool HQ choices all around.

Nothing concrete yet, but I think I want my Necrons to be bronze...

I'm also thinking I'm going to actually grab Dark Vengeance first. Partly because I keep hearing its on the way out in favor of a new set. Partly because extra cultists are cheap and Im thinking they'd be good to practice painting on.
