Subject: A few Questions after my First Game

So I just finished my first game of X-wing with a friend, and we had a few questions.
1) What happens when two ships collide? I believe they stop in their tracks and cannot perform an action?
2) How do Target Locks work? Do they get discarded at the end of each turn like Focus Tokens if not used?
3) Do critical hits still remove a hull point as well as dealing the effect detailed on the card??
Thanks in advance of any clarification you can give!!

1 the ship that collides stops and cannot perform an action. If the ship that was his hasn't yet moved it still can as normal, it it's still in contact it can't perform an action. Shooting is fine except at the ship you are in contact with. Note with huge ships it's more complex, but don't worry for now.
2 target locks stay until they are used or until you decide to ditch them, so you can acquire a target lock on a new target, as long as you remove the lock on the old target
3 yes, they just do something bad too

1) Plastic Bases Overlapping
If a ship executes a maneuver that would cause the final position of its base to physically overlap another ship’s base (even partially), follow these steps:
1. From the opposite end of the template, move the active ship backward along the top of the template until it no longer overlaps another ship. While moving the ship, adjust it so that the template remains centered between both sets of guides on the ship’s base. Place the ship so that the bases of both ships are touching.
2. Skip this ship’s “Perform Action” step.
(Main Rulebook, P.17)
2) Target Locks are not discarded like Focus Tokens. They stay until used. They are used during the shooting step to reroll any number of dce from an attack roll, or used to fire some secondary weapons. See pages 9 and 11 in the main rulebook.
3) Yes they do. When the number of Damage cards dealt to a ship is equal to or greater than its hull value, the ship is immediately destroyed (faceup and facedown cards count toward this total). (Main Rulebook, P.16)
Hope that helps.

Okay thanks a lot guys!! We did get everything right then - although I think we did mess up on one collision and just let the ship move through it!!
At least we'll know for next time!!

Remember that it is only a collision if the ship that is moving would end its move overlapping the base of the other ship. If the movement template overlaps a ship but the final position of the moving ship gets completely past it then it isn't a collision (so you can fly completely through another ship without any effect but you can't end up on top of one).

Well that has completely thrown me I think I need a good sit down with the rule book!! Automatically Appended Next Post: I have one more question too!!
Action cards - such as Marksmanship, do you only get to use this once, or can you choose to activate it during any of your action phases??

You only discard cards when you're told to like a Proton Torpedo does. Marksmanship isn't an upgrade that tells you to discard it so you can continue to perform that action in your subsequent action phases.

Its an action, so when you would normally choose to Focus, Evade, Barrel Roll or Target Lock (only those your ship has available) you instead choose to Marksmanship.
You do this at the same time as you would normally perform an action, ie after you have completed your movement.
If you have flown through an asteroid or ended your movement touching one, you cannot perform any action and therefore cannot perform Marksmanship.
You can choose to use the Marksmanship action as many times as you like, because the card does not tell you to spend or discard the card.

Played again the other evening, and Marksmanship was fantastically helpful on my Mauler Mithell - practically killed Luke Skywalker in two turns!! Thanks for the clarifications on the rules - I look forward to continuing with the game

Don't let the occasional success with marksmanship make you think it's a good card, because it usually isn't. The extra crits do nothing if you hit shields or would kill them with normal damage anyway, so most of the time it's just a focus action that costs points and your EPT slot and can't be used on defense. The only time it's really worth buying is on ships that get multiple attacks (cluster missiles, for example) since a focus token only boosts one attack while marksmanship boosts all of them.
