As above, when did the Night Lords start wearing the bat helmets with the wings on them. Just curious if they wore them regularly during the heresy or if it started late afterwards. I know that FW just came out with NL Raptors with the wings on the helm but curious if Command and tac marines wore them too.

I've actually never seen anything in the fluff pointing to the Night Lords having the comical GW wings on their helmets, only that they used small ornaments and death-masks on their faceplates during the Great Crusade/Horus Heresy. Otherwise Night Lord armor is largely scavenged and roughly customized. There is no standard.

That last bit actullay answered another tidbid I was pondering. I was thinking of building up some 30k Night Lords, I happen to have about 20 of the wing helmets laying around which is why I brought this up.

Huh... I might have a fun time mixing some FW Mk 2, 3 and 4 armours together. Might throw a couple of the GW helmets into my mix to just make things truly weird and unique.

These wings are almost as terrible looking as the topknot ponytail.

I think I heard about that helmet once in the fluff, in Blood Reaver I think, when they were going to meet Huron.

In one of the NL books it's mentioned that the large bat winged helmets were more of a ceremonial thing and that only some wore them during actual battle.

Here's a picture of the front cover of Prince of Crows

It shows Sevetar in full battle garb along with bat wing helm. In one of the stories it mentions that he hates the helm as it makes him obvious to pick out. As you can see from the other Night Lords, he is the only one wearing the helm so perhaps they are only reserved for ceremony, as gianlucafiorentini123 says, or reserved for those of certain responsibility.

When they were adopted, I have no idea. I would say after the Heresy and perhaps after they were forced into the Eye.

I don't believe the Night Lords in the Night Lords trilogy were said to have worn the bat wing helms.

The Bat-winged Skull was always their symbol, and some did paint and modify their helmets to make them even scarier, even before the Heresy, so I'd say there's a good chance some ornate helmets with wings were always present - ceremonial helmets for the officers, veteran helmets etc., to start with.

It's always possible the Traitor Marines wanted to separate themselves from the Loyalists, so that could be a fluffy basis for more batwings after the Heresy.

They haven't been released (yet?) but FW has shown off some winged helmets - different from the Night Raptor ones - on regular Heresy marines.

Spoiler:

This, while from the Great Crusade/Horus Heresy, is probably the most realistic depiction of Night Lord armor in the 41st Millennium. It should have a little warp taint like all CSM armor, but it wouldn't be as pronounced unless they were a veteran or a Chaos Raptor/Warp Talon. Hell arguably Night Lords might go through armor so fast that it doesn't even have the time to be mutated by the warp.

I think this

winged helmet looks much cooler than the current version.

In his work with them, Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Night Lords indicate that the batwing helm is a dress/ceremonial helmet. Some Night Lords (Xarl) wear theirs anyway in the 'modern' times, and I'm sure some squads went to battle with them on anyway.

I've always loved the batwing ears. The Night Lord hero model is my favorite model in the entire line. Its a real shame my 10 bat wing Night lords (and beaky raptors) are un-playable...

Why are they unplayable?

Officer ceremonial thing. I use them to mark out my sergeants

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Unplayable in that Chaos Space Marine troops are sub-par, and Chosen are too expensive with no real benefits.

Even in themed lists i'm object to using CSM. Might just have to upgrade them to Noise Marines (without sonics) just for fearlessness.
