I finally bought this game in a drunken nerd rage about the new ork codex. Started 40k in the early 90s with Space Marine Epic. The scale always appealed to me.

Looks like the UCM is a safe bet. The drone aircraft carrier thing appeals to me too. Seems like buying that giant starter army may be going overboard. Any suggestions? Buy two smaller ones (UCM, Scourge)? Plus if you have advice on how to get my peeps hooked, I'm all ears.

Go for the 2 player starter, it'll give you a basis for a 600 pt or so UCM list as well as something you can use to demo to your friends.

The two player starter is the best way to go in. It cost the same as one of the resin starters (due to cheaper plastics), but is two for the price of one (getting about 550pts of scourge and UCM). It also comes with a playmat, cardstock buildings, dice, tape measure, and the entire rulebook with the rules for all four armies. It is truly a steal.

Right. I bought the 2 person starter already. It's in-bound.

I was thinking about the NEXT purchase... Should I buy more Scourge and UCM to expand the force to get my little group hooked, or just go for an army for me? Or keep the 2 player set and then buy 1 each of the starter armies for Shaltari and PHR? I'm thinking of the best way to manipulate my friends! Dastardly, I know.

I'd just expand on what you've got now; if your group really wants to try Shaltari or PHR then you could always proxy just to get the feel of it.

If you are definitely going to use the UCM to springboard your army the Ferrum is a fine choice (it also neatly bumps the army to 750 pts).

A command choice and command cards would be wise.

For my UCM force, I actually got two of the 2 Player Starters - not just for the figures, but for the extra rulebook, buildings, etc. Comparing the cost of the plastics to resin, it was totally worth it, especially knowing I'd use the tanks and dropships. And it gives you something to trade/gift Scourge players.

Beyond that, you'll definitely want the Kodiak, since its your only (currently) command choice. The Ferrum is pretty awesome, too. And as someone mentioned, Command cards. I find I usually I use at least one Raven for troops, often three. They are a bit faster and easier to maneuver than Condor/Bears (and cheaper). Between those and a 2nd starter, you're easily at 1000 points, and with a decent army and some nice selection.

Beyond that, I _really_ like the Eagle, but its usually a higher point option (1500+). And of all the extra tanks and options, I like the Gladius tanks the best, although I know some folks really like Katanas, especially for building demo. Longbows are fun toys, but you'll need Ravens to port them around.

My suggestion for priority?

1. Command + Cards
2. Scout Unit (AA capable)
3. Infantry + Ravens
4. Anti-Tank Heavy or Support Unit
5. Fast Movers

Point cost fluctuates, but this should get you to about 1250 points if you take drop-ships for most units. Two notes about my suggestion however.

1. A lot of people will advocate skimping on drop-ships for more points to spend on things that can shoot at buildings turn one. I highly suggest avoiding this mentality. It cripples your maneuverability, gives up vital board control, and is anything but dynamic. If you do drive on have a very good reason for doing so. A good drive on example for UCM is the Kodiak or Ferrum.

2. The UCM have excellent fast movers point for point. Some people dislike them for reasons of unreliability as to when they will show up, but they can make or break a game. They also force enemy AA weapons to hold back for fear of having valuable targets (like ravens) sniped.

Kodiak and Ferrum is all you really need, you don't even need dropshios. Plus the command cards.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I would buy a second starter set, its actually cheaper than buying UCM units on thier own and you need to double up on the basic units.

Thwsn as stated buy Kodiak, Ferrum command card deck and some Wolverines and Raven B's to transport them. You are pretty much done there, everything else is gravy.

Meanwhile sell off your Scourge or build a scourge army. That means Despoiler, Annihilator, command cards and Prowlers.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
