Lets take 3 flamers and 2 heavy flamers in a sternie squad for example. In 6th, unless you had a further ranged weapon (even a pistol would do), you could only kill the models up to the maximum range of your templates. Anything more was overkill. Now you have to shoot seperately and if your combi-flamers kill everyone within range (obviously you would shoot the heavy flamers first to maybe save your combis tbf) then your heavy flamers won't get to shoot... well this makes no difference - they couldn't have killed more models anyway as they would have been out of range to have done so in the first place! Even if they had shot together they would have killed as many models - there would have just been more overkill.

I see the point that if you would have covered 5 with the flamers and kill 3 with your 15 hits you then get only 4 hits left from the heavy flamers rather than 10. But people seem not to be complaining about this but rather that they wouldn't get to shoot with the heavy flamers at all (if the flamers killed everyone). That just means your flame weapons have done their job to the maximum efficiency - it would not be possible for them to do more!

The real nerf is other weapons like a pistol not extending the range of flamers (which makes utter sense), but hardly anybody mentions this.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Or am I just misunderstanding a rule?

I think a lot of peoples complaints are due to the old rules being loopholed and shoehorned into claiming that (for the utterly OTT example) a unit of 14 burna boys and a big mek with a big shoota could kill anything within 36". the new rules make you fire separately so can, as you said, only kill models in template range.

I'm in agreement with you that if you've killed everything then who cares if it fired or not. but, as you said, it does decrease the number of hits you can get with subsequent template weapons, and "logic" (oh, that fits into warhammer like the titanic in a toilet) dictates that they would fire at the same time. perhaps if people hadn't abused the heck out of the old rules for wound pools etc then they may have done so. the fact that GW has to feed us the game in baby steps now is tantamount to the fact that if they try and streamline the game, some fool will come along with burnas that can kill a blob-squad of guardsmen that spans the entire board.

So people are actually annoyed about one rule (that ranged weapons no longer extend templates), but are complaining about another that actually makes no difference because otherwise they would be seen to have been previously abusing loopholes in the rules to game for advantage basically.

That's odd in the 40k gaming world as finding loopholes to gain advantage seems to be part of the competition nowadays! But that seems to be the only logical explanation!
