So I'm in the market for a new wargame, and somebody at my club is looking to get people playing Malifaux.
For me (and many others) the models of a game are incredibly important - its gonna sound a bit stupid, but I can't seem to find a simple model gallery on the wyrd games website, like I can with like every other game in existance =/
Can somebody help a guy out? I need to know if the models appeal to me. I've seen some cool looking stuff and some... well, weird flesh eating teddy bears that aren't my thing. If the good outweighs the bad then I could be interested

As far as I know, there isn't an 'official' Malifaux gallery, but Dakka and the Wyrd forums do have plenty of painters showing off their Malifaux stuff. It might take a bit of digging, but there's not a much easier route that I can think of.

I feel you brutha', as I too have just started with the Malifaux range and felt the complete lack of a site just showing off all the models. What you want is a nice gallery you can just flick through to see all the factions and models, but there is no such thing for Malifaux. It's a game just hunting down each model/set of models to check them out.
But all that said, you've come to the right game. The quality of the Malifaux models is absolutely stunning and has lots of character. Even the flesh eating Teddy has a pretty awesome place in the fluff, being a part of a faction of little kid's nightmares. (I was really sceptical at first too.)
If awesome models is what draws you into a game, then give Malifaux some serious legwork to find the models. It's really worth it, and the quality of the sculpts just seems to be increasing with every new model released.
You'll find things like the Death Marshalls
or one of my personal favourites, the Witchling Stalkers

Its both the quality of the sculpts and the art style that I'm interested in.
Those are both pretty damn good man! I was concerned it would be too many ironic tophats, random cogs, hilariously oversized weapons etc due to the time period and steampunky genre.
I could see myself playing this, thats for sure. Those Death Marshalls for instance... might be a bit on the silly side with those coffins and gak (and maybe I'll get used to it, wasn't a fan of infinity aesthetic either at the start) but I cannot argue with the dynamism of those sculpts, thats some sexy stuff
Just wanted to make sure its not like Warmachine. Great game, fugly models and a fanatical adherence to official models and WYSIWYG.

The quality of the models from a technical standpoint is unparalleled as far as I've experienced, not even GW's most recent kits come close to capturing the sheer dynamism and detail of the Malifaux plastics.
The art style is fairly subdued as steampunk goes; the elements are all there, but there's nothing without a reason (eg The Death Marshall's coffins actually have a place in the game and the fluff, they aren't just decorative.). There's a lot of variety, so you probably won't like all of it (there are some models, such as the Death Teddy, that I really don't like the look of, but then there's things like the Marshals that are just epic in every way to me).
Rules-wise, the game is very good as well; I've only played twice, and already I feel like I have the hang of the mechanics and have yet to be bored. It's intuitive, fast, very tactical and immensely fun.
As for the possibilty of conversions and non-standard models, they don't seem to lend themselves to that simply because the design of the plastics is to make those dynamic poses look as fluid as possible, so conversion without a lot of GS work will be hard, but in terms of scheme you can go wild, and as for WYSIWIG, everything a model has/does is on a stat card, so even if you convert/counts-as and don't have the exact weapon, there shouldn't be any confusion.

Sweet. Yeah I'm definitely going to take a look into this in a couple of days when real life stuff dies down. Can't believe I let such a mint looking game slip under the radar because of that friggen bear.

The models and illustrations are very closely linked (I forget the process, but both sculpt and illustration are based on the same thing).
Link to the official gallery
The game is really solid and tactically interesting, and I can't say enough good about the models. They're fiddly and a little fragile, but spectacular.
Also, regarding conversion and WYSIWYG, their new policy is you can't use unconverted models as other models, but other than that they're very loose, and the community is very flexible about that stuff in my opinion.

I just picked up a small army and I'm sculpting quite a few pieces. Don't be put off by the "steampunk" label, it's just shorthand for saying the game mixes the fantastical with historic design. I'd say it's more "Horror/Western/Martial Arts/ Sci-fi. It reminds me of a cross between Brisco County and Big Trouble in Little China than anything else. There's almost none of that dopey Final Fantasy/Anime style crap that poisons the design of other games.
I know exactly what you mean with Warmachine, I have the same issues. (I love the idea of Cryx, not so much the models.) So far I'm loving Malifaux; I've experienced absolutely none of that elitist attitude when it comes to proxies.
As a fellow betrayed ork player, I'd be remiss not to mention there's something of a grot/orkish expy;

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome. |

Those Gremlins look pretty sweet man.
Games passed the model test, now I've got to see the rules and find out what size community we've got.

To get a feel for your local community, check out their Henchman list (similar to WarmaHordes Press Gangers), and contact any that are local to you:

Lame, only one in New Zealand, and he's half a country away!
I'm pretty sure the local community is non-existant, but so was Infinity a year or so ago and we just had a dozen person event.

I imagine it'll take no more than one demo game to get people interested. With a buy-in that costs only marginally more than a Tactical Squad and rules that are both unique and exceptionally elegant, you'll have a community up and running in no time!

It's funny that you said that because that was the exact same reason why I didn't want to give it a run. I was actually at my FLGS 2 weeks ago looking to get into Infinity and the guy started telling me about Malifaux and showed me the models and explained the basic concept of the game. I saw the Guild's Judgment crew for the Guild and I was sold. Put it together in one sitting and just about got them painted up. The models look almost exactly like the concept art and they are really easy and fun to paint. Just placed an order for the Torch and the Sword and The Thunder crews, as well as for the Terraclips Sewers of Malifaux terrain kit..........really makes me wish I would have gotten into this game before I discovered 40K. I will be introducing this game to some folks.

I was just thinking that next week Wyrd is going to be displaying the entries for their summer painting contest. You're probably going to see a lot of awesome stuff then. Check their homepage for more details, but I know that Friday is the last date for submissions and the voting starts the week after.
The Crystal Brush site also has some Malifaux stuff in it, painted by ridiculously talented peoples.
