Hi all,

I currently run a mechanised AM list using lots of Russes and Chimera vets with a sprinkling of artillery and air support, but I'm looking to a) expand my model collection and b) Give my enemies a new and interesting punch other than blasting with tanks alone. I quite like the idea of having some small force deep striking in and wrecking face close on turn 1/2 while the tanks close. I was initially looking at using a Tempestus Scion platoon as I love the models and they're bristling with special weapons, but 300ish points for a 4 special command squad and two 5 man squads with meltas seems rather steep.....like almost Space Marine price.

So my question is, what combos work well as allies to AM currently? Do the old favourites like Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard in Drop pods still work? What about Salamanders in pods with their new chapter tactic? Or even the scions from the Militarum Tempestus book with orders? What works well with AM?

Well DPing space marines of various flavors just add more tools to your box o tools.
you can kit them out to alpha strike specific threats T1-2 while the rest of your army pounds away.
Personally dislike Stormtroopers as as you point out it is too pricy

edit: Troop DP are also awesome for objective secured. for tactical i prefer melta guns. if possible command squads with plasma up the wazoo is nice too but that gets pricy as well.

overall marines are marines. 14point bs4 and will die to a slightly stiffer breeze.

Yeah I was thinking about how useful objective secured drop pods would be. Maybe something like 3-4 5 man Salamander tac squads in drop pods with a melta and combi melta podding in. Maybe a cheap librarian with them?

As much as I love grimdark red berets, you're almost paying marine points for them anyway...

If you want something fun and new, I can't recommend anything better than using Cypher in creative ways. He's a 190 point model you can add in that joins your primary detachment. I wrote an article that lists all his benefits, though bear in mind my original message in it with using infiltrate is in murky waters due to a rules debate.

That said, there is no debate on whether or not Cypher gives you Outflank, so if you more or less ignore the bits on infiltrate, you may find it useful.

As you may see in that article, I take an Inquisitor. They are pretty good assets to an Astra Militarum army as they make your Guardsmen less weak and when you give them a few toys they can do some wacky and interesting stuff, while solving morale issues.

Taking 5 man squads with the Militarum Tempestus is decent if you just take the Command squad and 1 5 man squad. That way its just opportunity kills.

Imperial Knights are very good gameplay wise, but not overpowered, they're generally accepted and they're great models. Though the price of the model is discouraging, its probably cheaper than buying an allied detachment. They may appeal to you because they're very aggressive and different to using Russes.

Space Marines are iffy. Tactical Squads are basically a joke, Scout Squads give you nothing and unless you're taking Bikes in Troops you're wasting your time and your points. The only appeal of a Drop Pod ally is getting Sternguard really, and that becomes a bit silly of a prospect when you can put out the same amount of firepower from across the board already, without losing the absurdly costed unit in a turn.

I'd suggest adding a Imperial Knight to spice things up.

Why not spend 68 points and get two generic Inquisitors (of Zenos, Mallus or Hereticus) and the 6 servo-skulls that they give you access too? An inquisitorial detachment is separate from your allies, so you can take something else if you really want.

Servo Skulls are awesome. Each prevents enemy scouting and infiltration within 12 inches of them, and are placed before deployment. That's a 2 foot diameter circle for each one. With six you can cover everything outside of the deployment zones. The other thing that servo skulls do is reduce scatter by 1d6. Your MoOs are now twice as accurate, all of your ordinance is nearly pinpoint accurate, and you can deep strike much more aggressively.

I have been running a mix of russes and vets in chimeras, out flanking scout sentinels, vendetta, storm trooper squad, 2 plasma vet squads, yarrick, with one squad of sniper vets. In addition, I run an imperial knight or two depending on points. They draw a lot of fire power away from the tanks, and chimeras too. Vthat is a good thing.

Imperial Knight detachment: 375

How do you use Yarrick in a mech list like that? I really want to use him for my list which is completely mech but I cant find an effective way. Do you put him in with the vets in chimeras?
