OKLAHOMA CITY — A candidate who was soundly defeated in Tuesday's Republican primary by U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas says he will contest the election because the incumbent congressman is dead and an imposter is filling his shoes.

Timothy Ray Murray garnered 5.2 percent of the vote in Tuesday's three-candidate Republican primary, which Lucas won outright with 82.8 percent.

On Wednesday, Murray, who listed his residence as Moore on his declaration of candidacy, announced he would contest the election.

In a press release posted on his campaign website, he alleges “it is widely known Rep. Frank D. Lucas is no longer alive and has been displayed (sic) by a look alike. Rep. Lucas was depicted as being executed along with others on a white stage in southern Ukraine on or about Jan. 11, 2011.”

Lucas could not immediately be reached for comment.

A spokesman for Lucas said Friday that the congressman is very much alive and has never been to the Ukraine.

Murray did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Murray has previously made an unsuccessful run against Lucas as a Democrat.

There is a great joy in getting serious people working in serious jobs to deny completely ridiculous accusations.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I have heard rumors that Captain Crunch doesn't actually hold the rank of Captain. Any comments?

A Commander can still be called "Captain" if he is the commanding officer of a ship, even if his actual rank isn't Captain. Although, he can only be called Captain while actually on his ship, and I don't think most of those Cap'n Crunch commercial are filmed at sea, so he's still in trouble...

Man, I cannot believe I forgot all about that. That got so much coverage on the comedy shows back in the day.

You'd think the Greens and Libertarians would take a long look at themselves after results like that. Taking the easy, idealistic road of the minor party is one thing, but when a dead guy gets a 100 times as many votes as you you gotta start thinking about how much value you're really offering.

Also, credit to Ashcroft for not lawyering up, because legally he could have kept the seat.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
