Hey, just getting started and my friends and I are going to start with some 500 pt games.

HQ: Farseer - Singing Spear

Troops: 10 Guardians - Brightlance Platform

10 Guardians - Brightlance Platform

Fast Attack: 5 Warp Spiders

Heavy Support: War Walker: Scatter Laser/Starcannon

I feel like this fields a pretty good mix of firepower and mobility, but I'm not 100% sure how to use my farseer.

Looks good for a 500 pts list. A foot-Seer will hang with the 20man guardian blob and be darn hard to kill whilst psychicly giving them buffs and protections.
Fortune, guide, invisibility. Also the scatter laser / starcanon load out on the walker is one I am seeing more of lately so as to get multiple ap2 shots vs some difficult hv infantry and such.

I am super worried about stuff like heldrakes, and I'm not really sure how the rules work with shooting at fliers.

Lol if you play against a heldrake in 500pts the dude is a douche canoe ( you are new after all)... Otherwise just try for lucky rear armour hits.

In small pt games you need numbers. In this way, your list is fine.

If you face some tougher units like a Helldrake, then take two Serpents with Dire Avengers led by a cheap HQ.
If the Serpents are equipped correctly, the enemy will suffer at this pt level.

But with his current list all he can hope for is some lucky rear armour if someone brings it.

But otherwise just camp objectives and shoot at whatever shows itself as a good target.
