I am fairly new, and I haven't run much of my army, yet. That being said, I am trying to make the most of the CSM book, which is quite a feet. Anyways, I had an idea regarding some interesting units and was wondering what everyone thinks. The primary grouping would be one of the following:

1 Daemon Prince, MoN, Wings, Power Armor - 220
Warp Talons, MoN, 180

OR

1 Daemon Prince, MoN, Wings, Power Armor - 220
Raptors, MoN, w/flamers & metla bombs - 125

What I am curious about is not so much the builds, such as weaponry and so forth, but how the unit will move and the cover saves. My read of Jink combined with the Shrouded rule the DP gets, means that if the unit jinks, it will be getting a 2+ cover save. That, combined with the toughness 5 and power armor, will make these fast moving units rather difficult to keep from getting in close and doing some damage. I also think that the second option is the better of the two, but that the first would be absolutely brutal on the all the space marine players that are spamming drop pods.

What do you guys think? Can this work in the movement phase? Do you think it is worth the points? What other builds would you consider?

The raptors and warp claws are not daemons of nurgle (despite warp claws being daemons), and thus, do not get shrouded. Neither do jump infantry get jink. Only the prince, because it's a FMC.

So, the prince works (though he needs a better weapon like the black mace and/or psychic powers) for a 2+ cover save, but the raptors/claws are pretty flawed.

The DP is going to be exposed because there are a lot of weapons that ignore cover these days. Shrouded isn't going to make a huge difference.

As far as the Raptors / Warp Talons go, you are right, WTs will own deep striking SM players. Unless they are deep striking Dreadnoughts, which WTs can't do much about.

As far as it being worth the points - here's how to make that comparison. Take a CL on a bike and a squad of 5 bikers. Give the CL whatever upgrades you want. Ask yourself, besides the ability to do smash attacks with the DP, what you are losing from what you have here and if it's still worth it.

Unfortunately I think you've missed that Daemon Princes aren't independent characters and cannot join a unit of anything.

A daemon prince with Cursed Earth from Daemonology can cast it on himself and a nearby squad of Tzeentch Warp Talons to give everyone a 3+ invuln, which can be a bit safer than any possible cover saves. Casting it also means he can make those warptalons deepstrike anywhere next to him, which can be useful to put them in range for their blind attack without the risk of a deepstrike mishap.

Daemon princes have taken a huge hit in the melee department. Especially against top tier armies, if your opponent is at all competative and playing tau or eldar expect him to die first turn to maybe half your opponents army shooting unless he is airborne (in which case he cant assault).

For my points i prefer either a nurgle flying prince kitted out for summoning (lvl 2 + familiar if chaos or lvl 1 if codex daemons) or a slaanesh lash prince with lvl 1 malefic daemonology.

7th really favours lots of little units and a prince with the fat burned off can really help you score hard to reach spots with summoned daemonettes. You can also buy a brand or portaglyph (daemons) if you like for added utility.

basically any time a prince lands (which he has to for a turn before he charges) he is going to get shot to pieces.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
ask yourself:
what can a nurgle prince with black mace and iron arm (if he is lucky) do that a couple of soul grinders with mon/slaanesh not do just as well (and far more reliably).

I'm guess he's not really talking competitive play in which case a DoN prince with 2+ cover save can be a terror on the battle field. Warp talons (especially with MoS) can really make marines cry but much like the prince they are a risky tactic. Both types have the same disadvantages in that they are not all that durable for the points you are paying. Each Warp talon loss is quite a blow both pointswise and to effectiveness. That said, it only takes a group of 5 MoS warp talons making it to a tac squad to really mess it up and take relatively little damage in return.
