Did anyone take part in the Kickstarter, or buy any of the initial retail releases? What are your thoughts on the rules and miniatures?
I am still learning the rules and haven't played my first game yet, but I quite like the move, shoot, move mechanic in the game. Having movement and positioning play such a key role in the tactics of the game is refreshing after years of playing relatively static "gun line" miniatures games. And the core combat system seems very intuitive and quick to grasp, which I find helpful when diving in to a new game.
Model-wise they aren't top tier by any stretch, but the model kits are beautiful in their simplicity and modularity. The steam tank kits fit together without the need of glue (perfect for demoing the system before committing to specific army builds) and the rules allow for "field modifications" for the human faction which allow players to customize the weapon load outs of their tanks. All in all pretty cool, and makes up for the simpler design and slightly soft features on the plastic tank kit.
The Martian tripod was more of a disappointment for me, but only because the tripods were my whole reason for getting into the game so my expectations may have been too high. The kit can make 3 variants but uses many of the same mono-pose legs and tentacle components among all three variants, leaving a Martian force looking rather homogeneous without extensive alteration. Like the steam tank kit, the tripod kit uses a slightly softer plastic than GW kits, which makes cutting and clean up work very easy so converting limbs and changing the pose of the tripods shouldn't be an issue for moderately experienced modelers. That said, the basic Assault Tripod is impressively tall, and a Martian force will look neat on the game table as it towers over the human armies.
I like that the mood of the game seems to perfectly encapsulate the tone of Wells' book. The Martians are relentless and unfeeling, represented by a lack of morale modifiers for casualties or fear, while the human armies seem to need to rely on numbers and a little bit of luck in order to repel the invaders. Human armies are majorly impacted by morale, which is double edged in terms of game play. If the humans do well and inflict a lot of damage on the Martians they get morale bonuses to their initiative roll which could help them keep the momentum going and do well the next turn. Conversely, if the humans suffer major damage in a turn their units can run off the board, and they can lose their fighting spirit and have initiative penalties for the next turn. Very thematic and cool, especially since the fragility of the human psyche is further balanced by allowing destroyed units to return to play as reserves if the human side has enough orders (a resource to be managed throughout the game). This lends a feeling of the humans greatly outnumbering the Martians who must wade through seemingly endless waves of troops and armor in their conquest of Earth.
So, shout out if you are taking up arms in the Great Interplanetary War! I'd love to hear how people are building their armies, or what tactics they think will work.

This was 15mm right? I did think it looked like it'd be interesting to try sometime in 6mm, so may keep my eye on here if it all picks up.

Yeah it is 15mm scale.
This is a battle report put out by the company that makes AQMF. It has some great photos and gives an indication of how the game plays and what the models look like.

I was a Kickstarter backer. Got my stuff, but haven't had time to do much beyond reading the rulebook.
I will say that, as someone who lived in Edmonton, Alberta for most of my life, I enjoyed the history bit where the Martians rolled through Calgary but got stopped in Edmonton.

I am seriously considering getting into this now, I'm just saving up the cash and trying to justify more models I may never paint.
The big boxset from Architecs of War seems like a really good value and everything you need to have several cracking games.
Thanks Obama!

Is anyone selling this outside of direct sales?
I missed the KS at the last second, pulling my pledge due to financial duress which popped up at the time, and have regretted it ever since.
It doesn't look like MiniaturesMarket, etc... is stocking the game, though.

I haven't found any discount sites offering this game. There is eBay seller tabletopgenerals who has been selling AQMF items for the last month or so, but that is about it.

Probably not much help to you as it's in the UK but Northstar carries it
http://www.northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=171&page=1
so it's out via distribution, they may just not be offering the margin to attract the big online discounters
Google provides these US based online sellers (I've no experience with either so you'll need to do your own checking on them)

I'm probably going to pull the trigger once I have a sense for their commitment to the project and their release schedule. If I see a healthy, regular release list working its way through all the fun stuff we saw during the Kickstarter, i'll probably jump in on that $270 mega-bundle.
I wish they had more options for buying product though. Their website/webstore is a little bit amateur-hour, and doesn't fill me with confidence.
The game though? That looks wonderful, and I terribly want to get started with it.

I would like to get into this game; 15mm is something I've only recently started to develop an interest in. I have 40k stuff and Dystopian Wars (which is, what, 1:1200?), so a 15mm game would fit right in-between.
I've looked at DZC but I feel it's a bit too similar in terms of futurism like 40k. AQMF is for some reason more inspiring- maybe because it's pulling from an older book, but I like the "feel" of the background. I'll most likely pick up the starter a some point in the near future, I'm hoping this game becomes very popular!

No, it was the basic Assault Pod and MkII American Steam Tank.
I'm not usually a fan of IGOUGO systems, but this one seemed interesting enouh to try. Plus, i wanted a new battle game of this scale witha sci-fi alternate reality twist.

So is it just me or does the starter set seem pretty bare bones for 100 bucks? It doesn't seem like they give you much to get you interested.

I'll agree it is not one of the best starters when compared to say 40k or Dropzone Commander, but the game works pretty well right out of the box. I've been running mainly starter box demo games and I'm pretty happy with it. Now that we are comfortable with the rules we will be increasing the point value.
The downside of the starter are the errors in the mini rule book, but they are less of an issue now that a FAQ has been released.

hey crimson, is there a better setup that someone could buy individually instead of the starter and end up at around $100 with a better selection of stuff?

I think the starter is the best way to start. The models alone are worth more than $100.00. It is an excellent price break. The only reason I wouldn't recommend it is if you really want to play the British army.

Anyone having fits with the Rough Rider models?
After reading their rules I wanted to get a large group of Rough Riders together, but after having built my first 3 stands of bikes I am seriously reconsidering that idea. The limbs are really finicky to glue into place, and some of the receiving slots for the handlebars on the bikes were not cast properly requiring some drilling. I think I spent about an hour assembling the three strands and was about ready to give up on the squad due to frustration.
My tide of motorcycles will likely remain an idle fantasy.

OH EM GEE YES! I have finally gotten around to working on my AQMF stuff and I tackled the RRs last night thinking I would have plenty of time to go on to my last batch of steam tanks. Nope! It's a two part model: handle bars and then everything else. But damn if it isn't a finicky business.

Sorry to hear you are having the same troubles, Manchu.
Its been a month since I last worked on those initial Rough Riders and I don't anticipate the remainder coming out of their baggies anytime soon. Too bad, because everything else in the line seems to go together with little effort.

Well, I finally made the plunge and bought the box set!
Since I moved up to Indianapolis about two months ago, I finally had a *little* free time from school to go by a store called Indy Gamerz and found out that the owner has a big display for the game, and apparently they play every Sunday- what luck! That alone convinced me I need to get on this train, and I'm glad to be supporting this up-and-coming game.

I got in at one of the lower level Kickstarters (bunch of Mk III's and some random units and a couple Tripods), which makes trying to do demos pretty much impossible. I'm trying to build support in my group and there is some interest, but first I need to buy and build some armies (insert rant about herding cats here.)
I need to get one of the local stores to stock it, too -one of them seems to have a player base in the making there as well.
