I was playing a game last night where I wanted to try out a Space Marine build using a Blood Angels allied detachment. Part of my list plan was to have my White Scars Librarian and Chapter Master join up with Mephiston and Brother Corbulo. My opponent claimed it was not legal a formation, even if they are Battle Brothers.

I argued that the Independent Character rules state that ICs can ally with ANY unit expect vehicles and Monstrous Creatures. Since Mephiston is an Infantry type unit, Corbulo, the Librarian and the Chapter Master could join him.

My opponent argued that in the Character section of the rules it noted specifically that "most units are made up of several models plus a Sargent or Commander. Some characters, such as the Blood Angels' Mephiston, will always fight alone." His claim was that the one line of text under Characters specifically says that Mephiston can never join or be joined by another unit.

We eventually decided to roll a d6 to figure it out (I won the roll) but I'm curious to know who was right.

The exact quote is

Which is true Mephiston is always a unit of one.

However the first line of the following paragraph has:

Some characters have the Independent Character special rule, which allows them to join other units.

The independent Character rule has no restrictions preventing an IC from joining a unit of one anymore I don't see a problem here.

I guess he isn't one of them though. If a Character has the independent character rule they can join units.

You are correct, the restriction on joining units that always consist of a single model was removed in 7th edition.

That piece about Mephiston in the IC section is more or less fluff or a short description/explanation. ICs can join any unit, barring the exceptions listed in the IC section.
