So over the weekend a guy charged me in the same turn with a tiny squad of ork boys (he declared this first) then charged me in the same phase with both a big squad of boys and a squad of meganobs.. can you use a decoy squad to take the damage and then assault in proper with your fighty units unharmed?
The way i read it is assault charges happen at same so i could choose one of his units to overwatch. He was pretty chuffed with his strategy so i let it slide until i could find the answer.

It has been debated.
A majority of people myself included although I disagree) will say you cannot declare Overwatch against a target if you have been successfully charged that turn. The other side says you are not locked until the start of the Fight sub-phase, meaning you could charge with some Gretchin, then declare a charge with some Boyz, and have Overwatch fired at the boyz.
Long story short, too much back and forth before breaking down into insults and the mods locking.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

No idea as I don't play in tournaments. However, I would hazard a guess they rule the same way the majority does. While all charges happen in the Charge sub-phase they are not simultaneous and as such if the first unit makes it into contact you lose your chance to Overwatch.

Yeah, it was a debated point last edition. 7th edition clarified it by stating that a unit is locked the moment it is in base contact. So you can only Overwatch at the first unit, unless their charge is unsuccessful.

HappyJew, I want out that there are now instructions telling us that the Unit is locked in combat the moment the final Model completes it's Charge, was a nice addition. If you follow this sequence, you will end up with all the models in the charging unit in unit coherency, having engaged as many enemy models as possible with as many charging models as possible. The two units are now locked in combat (see below). Ninja'ed, teaches me for not reading the entire thread before posting, damn.... Automatically Appended Next Post: On a side note;

lungpickle, insaniak, and Jinx. Just wanted to apologize for bad information. I think it shows that I need to play more than 1 game of 7th edition.

This.
Once you are locked in combat, you've lost your chance for Overwatch. Strategic Charges are part of the game. A single Boy could charge a full unit. You must decide to overwatch or not, if you choose to Overwatch and the charge is successful, you've lost your chance to overwatch against any other unit charges you. If you Overwatch and either kill the first charger or they fail their charge, you've used your chance at Overwatch that turn.
It a little buff for assault armies, and man do they need everyone they can get their hands on.

How about the other way around? Overwatch from multiple units in a disordered charge...
Unit A (orks) assaults Units B, C and D (blood angels). Do all the blood angel units fire overwatch?

Yes because as part of multicharging you have to declare all your potential targets you want to charge into. So they all get to overwatch even if you didn't actually make a model into base contact with them
