In the last few years since 6th I've played a total of 2 tournaments... And both times it was horrid experience cementing the more beer and pretzel game for me (whatever that means) what surprised me is that I'm not the only one.. There are now less tournaments and less people playing in them here in my city.. This is both GW and locals.. In fact I think a whole side ofthe city doesn't have a single tournament for the rest of the year..
Why? Well all of dakka can give a myriad of answers and I'm not threading about that..
The thing is I think this is calling the death knell of 40k for me and mine... The problem is without that random opponent game at the local GW store it's a battle of attrition.. And in my group.. Well people take breaks.. Get disheartened from polarised rules.. Get too much on their plates... It's gone from a dozen people I could have a friendly game where rules are secondary to fun.. To a measly 2.. And 1 of them is now 3 hours away..
Point is.. I want to see if this is the trend in other cities.. With a rule set that FORCES beer and pretzel and punshes non-eldar/tau tournament how can you replenish your group to replace the rate of leavers..
Are bigger cities more resistant to this?
Can GW grow it's player base faster or as fast as try loose older tournament/ random players..?

Down here on the gold coast we have the opposite problem, a single gaming group dominates the area and they are religiously devoted to playing GW, and ONLY, GW games. They run upwards of four tournaments a year and seem to be growing, or at least not shrinking.
If you're interested in coming down and playing against people who bring typhus and 200 zombies, or 6+ FMC daemons they I'd be happy to PM you the groups details (Id warn most people away but if that's what you want that's cool).
As for the actual topic, the GC is the exception, Brisbane is the rule. GW is hemoraging sales in the Oz market and they really aren't doing anything to try and help the situation. I now know a half dozen people who have gotten into the hobby without touching GW products where even 2 years ago whatever you played at the time, you ALWAYS entered the hobby via GW.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Yeah I'd like that actually moved north side and it's DEAD.. And I have no compunction to play random games with teenage nerds with such a lack of social skills you physically cringe every time they speak..
So please PM me since Brisbane seems to be all about that Starwars table top game and.. Well.. Thankfully I still had bloodbowl..

I have seen groups die in several states now in the US and, either due to my travels West or the timeline itself (or a combo of the two), there seems to be a lot more other games being played. Warhammer 40k is still quite pervasive, but it's not like it used to be. Warhammer Fantasy is pretty much a novelty when I see it played.
Do you know if other games are sucking up the time and money of other folks or is it a complete shut down?

At least going by the events posted on WargamerAU, I'm not seeing any reduction in the number of events being run in Brisbane... but attendance is certainly way down from where it was towards the end of 5th edition.

Most of the tourn being down is due to LFGS and the only GW in the area loosing interest/money on them.. EG double headers where every three moths when I was a teen.. Now once a year a a single store..
Even the GW bunker has a lot of problems holding onto the tourns they do mostly (opinion) due to low staff comparatively.
( GW bunker situation is entirely based on my opinion from what I have seen over the years.. GW staff have not ever made official comment on the issue)

Been pretty lucky. My regular play group consists of 4 guys who are all brothers and a couple of their relatives. We get a game in a week or so whenever we all happen to be in town together (which admittedly won't be happening much for the near future).
Finding a new group of people to play with is my least looked forward to part of this hobby. It's why I hardly got to play for 4 years while I was at college unless I came back home for break.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!
