I have played this game for way too long now. My favorite times playing were tournaments. Why you ask because I knew I was going to my local game store, and was going to have a whole day of play. Better yet no one was building a list just to smash my army. I play Orks and except for a few friends I have always found that pickup games had armies fine tuned to destroy me. Discussing all them games and the mistakes made then laughing with a large group of guys after the tournament or during the lunch break was awsome.
Now that is all gone I haven't seen a tournament in years :(. I Miss those days but with the current format tournaments are just not plausable.
Now is where you say that's my fault or the fault of my LGS but hey that's your oppinion and your welcome to it. All I know is my once great community of 40K players are either gone or are playing WarmaHordes. Those that exsist still are either just holding on or run large numbers of super models leavening the game just IMO no fun.
Say all the nasty things you want about this post and tell me I am wrong but this is how I feel.

Well, in our gaming group which used to play fantasy and 40k there is also a move to WM/H. Some players switched fully while the majority is still on the move.

In 6th we've had a pretty solid tournament scene. I played probably once a month in Tournaments last year. Granted, I traveled a bit for some, but overall got the majority of my games in tournaments.

Never really wanted to have anything to do with the tournament scene since I am a sworn casual gamer who doesn't like to play really competitively, then I went to my first one last weekend. It was quite fun and pretty casual as tournaments go. Just 750 points. Ranged from people who just started playing and picked their army because they liked the models, to people who have been playing since 3rd edition but just enjoy the game and don't try to bring the most overpowered stuff they can. I was probably the most "gamey" person in the room since I brought Tau and most other people were some kind of power armor or else Tyrandis.
I quite enjoyed myself honestly. I've changed my stance about tournaments. I like them as long as they're not taken too seriously.

The tournaments for 40k have pretty much died off here too. Lots going on for warmahordes though. Sucks for the people that enjoyed playing in them but you can thank GW for screwing any possibility of that over at every turn. Wow, such narratives. Very forged.

I used to love them back in fourth. Until iron warriors killed that edition!
But nothing beats a day of gaming, knowing you've got three or four games all lined up. Tournaments are great for that 'concentrated gaming' experience and catching up with folks you'd otherwise rarely meet.
Yeah, I like 'em.

That a large portion of the player base is leaving or has left 40k and GW is missing an opportunity to vitalize the community. That some people's idea of fun is no longer compatible with GW's games.

I would agree with the OP observation.
Tournaments were a ton of fun, got to play with all kinds and laugh at each other, or ourselves.
Presently, few tournaments happen and if they do, it all boils down to a few builds that pretty much stomp anything. At the very least, the local scene just does not seem to have the energy to figure out what tournament rules to apply. I am not sure what would be "fair".
Soooooo.... X-wing has been fun for tournaments....

Having the same issue here. One guy would repeatedly bring the FoTM power list to every casual tourney and with 7th hitting and a lack luster Ork update there has been no participation in the tournaments and they just keep getting canceled one after another.
The last one had an entire list of restrictions and house rules to limit the game to basically HQ and Troops with no large blast weapons and other such restrictions.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Yep, the local store here has to heavily comp the game to draw a tournament crowd, but the comp system negated several of my armies so I said I'm done with 40k. And I wasn't talking Seercouncils, but SoB/IG/Inq armies. You know, what used to be a book a couple of editions ago.
I loved tournaments in 5E. I enjoyed a few in 6E. I have no wish to ever go to one now.

We had a really great tournament scene all threw fifth and parts of 6th. Then things slowly went down hill as people became familiar with 6th and things like baronstar and flying circus became a thing. The coordinators were constantly writing rule packs for each tournament to keep them balanced. Over time our tournaments of 30 players dwindled to a regular 10 to 15.
We are working on our first big 7th tournament. There is currently a lot of argument and bitching on the FB group regarding what rules to keep, drop, or modify.
It makes me sad. We use to run 4 big tournaments and 4 small tournaments. Those were the best days. It made the work week fly as all I could focus on was the tournament.
